UNSCATHED BY THE INSANITY OF OUR TIMES

By: April Shenandoah

We all talk about freedom, but do we really understand what it is? Most of us could at least say what it is not.

Freedom is not: telling Mothers and Fathers how to raise their children - or educate them.

Freedom is not: putting American citizens in fear of their own police force (we were told they are our friends).

Freedom is not: enforcing rules and regulations that make it almost impossible for good citizens not to break the law at some time.

Freedom is not: having our privacy invaded with cameras, wiretaps and home invasion with out a warrant.

Freedom is not: confiscating our homes and generational-family-farms for corporate development.

This entire column could be a list of things that infringe on our freedoms - and the list grows longer each day. If you are fed up with said loss of freedoms perhaps you can move to New Hampshire.

The Live Free or Die state is the location voted on in October, 2003, by the Free State Project (FSP) where folks are demanding "Liberty in our Lifetime." The words Live Free or Die were generated by General John Stark, the state’s most distinguished hero of the Revolutionary War, July 31, 1809, in a volunteer toast which he sent to his wartime comrades. It became the official motto of the state in 1945. Stark’s toast said in full: "Live Free or Die; Death Is Not The Worst of Evils."

Founded in 2001, the FSP is attempting to recruit 20,000 liberty-loving people - aiming to preserve one bastion of freedom in the age of intrusive government, to migrate to NH. They are looking for neighborly, productive, tolerant folks from all walks of life, of all ages, creeds, and colors who agree that government exists at most to protect people’s rights - and should neither punish them for activities that interfere with no one else.

These Libertarian types who are migrating to the Granite State will have no general income tax, nor sales tax. It is second only to Alaska for the lowest poverty rates, and the lowest crime levels in the U.S. The economy is booming with plenty of jobs and investment, and a culture of individual responsibility - there are no seatbelt or helmet requirements.

Get this - since 1889 NH legislators have earned a paltry $100 a year for their services. The state maintains the only Constitution in the country that protects its citizens the ‘right to revolution.’ One hundred (perhaps more by now) of NH residents have signed up for the FSP, and ex Republican Governor Craig Benson stood behind them. However, NH has since voted in Democratic Governor John Lynch to the mix.

Though the aforementioned sounds almost too good to be true, taking up residence in a warmer climate is best suited for survival for what we may face in the future. However, after the interested parties did their research, NH won out from among Montana, Wyoming, Delaware, Vermont, Maine, Idaho, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Alaska (all cold-climate states). The runner-up state was Wyoming, which defeated every other state but fell to NH by a 55 per cent to 45 per cent margin.

As Tim Robbins tells Meg Ryan in the 1994 movie IQ, "Question Everything." The FSP movement may have been started by freedom loving purists with the best of intentions. Or could it all be a ploy to round up like-minded "enemies of the state" (nation state) to put the squeeze on them? It will be most interesting to watch and see if the "elite powers" actually refrain from imposing present day rules and regulations on the good people of the FSP.

The average American citizen willingly follows sensible laws, and wants to live peaceably among his fellow man. But due to the strangeness of today’s world events, there are those playing with the idea of how to escape the horrors of living in a socialist police state.

The human race simply does not do well when being told what they can and cannot do, especially when there is no logical reasoning behind it. We are slaves because we have allowed it - and - we have no right to complain about what we allow!

More research is needed to find why NH appears to be unscathed by the insanity of our times. May God Bless and protect those who want to Live Free or Die - what ever state they live in.

Very well stated! Freedom may not be free but it certainly doesn’t always require death.

Good article. I like the overall tone and agree with the idea. In fact, I joined something called the First 1000. It is a Pledge Bank pledge to move to New Hampshire by the end of 2008 if 999 other people also agree to the pledge. More info on it, http://www.pledgebank.com/first1000

However, I did notice a few points in your article that may not be correct. It may be that various organizations gather data differently, because we are looking at data from different years, or some other reason. NH has the 2nd lowest taxes in the nation (only AK is better) but it also has the lowest poverty rate in America. Several states guarantee the right to revolution.

Here are a few more NH ‘cool factors’:
Most taxes are town-based, if you want to pay very little taxes, just live in a low tax town
A candidate for political office may represent more than 1 political party on the ballot
Elected 5 member Executive Council shares power with Governor
No Seatbelts, Motorcycle Helmets, Auto Insurance Required

Also, I have met most of the FSP leadership and I can guarantee that it is not a government ploy to round up the world’s best freedom activists into one small state.

Cool article. I am one of the guys that moved to NH because of the Free State Project. There are about 150 of us that have moved so far.
I like it in NH and am pushing for NH to seceed from the US.
I don’t quite believe in "Live Free or Die", but I am willing to not cooperate with the evil government even if it might bring punishment.

I have to say that this is the best article I have read about The Free State Project. I am a free state project participant, living in Newport, Sullivan County, New Hampshire. John Stark Highway runs right through town.

Unlike Russell, I follow all the laws, as I am aware of them, because I am constrained to by my religeous beliefs. It is my dream to no more dread the man with the guns of government, forcing me to conform to laws not provided for in the Constitution.

I strive to get along with my neighbors, and strive to liberate myself. They will see how wonderful it is to be free.

I welcome the people from Italy that wish to move to New Hampshire.

Sincerely,
Jeremy Robert Furbish

Excellent article. She does a great job of capturing the spirit of why I joined the FSP movement. I can’t make the move for a couple of years yet, but it sure feels like the place I want to be.

I go there on my motorcycle at least once a year. Nice to ride like a free man, by the way.

The best kind of government is one that trusts and respects its citizens, rather than one that fears and controls its subjects.

Does the writer of the article live in Italy? How does someone in a place that seems as socialist as Italy recognize freedom?

Neo-Nazis and far-right protesters in Ukraine 3 live-stream

The far-right in Ukraine are acting as the vanguard of a protest movement that is being reported as pro-democracy. The situation on the ground is not as simple as pro-EU and trade versus pro-Putin and Russian hegemony in the region. When US Senator John McCain dined with Ukraine’s opposition leaders in December, he shared a table and later a stage with the leader of the extreme far-right Svoboda party Oleh Tyahnybok. This is Oleh Tyahnybok, he has claimed a "Moscow-Jewish mafia" (...)

At first glance, the results of America’s 2012 election appear to be a triumph for social, racial, and economic justice and progress in the United States: California voters passed a proposition requiring the rich to shoulder their fair share of the tax burden; Two states, Colorado and Washington, legalized the recreational use of marijuana, while Massachusetts approved the use of marijuana for medical purposes; Washington and two other states, Maine and Maryland, legalized same-sex (...)

I’VE DECIDED TO "WASTE" MY VOTE
Sunday 28 October
by : David R. Hoffman, Legal Editor of Pravda.Ru
In a 2004 episode of Comedy Central’s animated series South Park, an election was held to determine whether the new mascot for the town’s elementary school would be a “giant douche” or a “turd sandwich.” Confronted with these two equally unpalatable choices, one child, Stan Marsh, refused to vote at all, which resulted in his ostracization and subsequent banishment from the town. Although this satirical vulgarity was intended as a commentary on the two (...)

HIGHER EDUCATION IN AMERICA: DREAM OR NIGHTMARE? PART IV

PART I PART II PART III If there is one major inconsistency in life, it is that young people who know little more than family, friends and school are suddenly, at the age of eighteen, supposed to decide what they want to do for the rest of their lives. Unfortunately, because of their limited life experiences, the illusions they have about certain occupations do not always comport to the realities. I discovered this the first time I went to college. About a year into my studies, I (...)

PART I PART III PART IV Several years ago, a young lady came into the college where I was teaching to inquire about a full-time instructor’s position in the sociology department. She was advised that only adjunct positions were available. Her response was, “No thanks. Once an adjunct, always an adjunct.” Her words still echo in my mind. Even as colleges and universities raise their tuition costs, they are relying more and more on adjunct instructors. Adjuncts are (...)

PART II PART III PART IV When The Bill of Rights was added to the United States Constitution over two hundred years ago, Americans were blessed with many rights considered to be “fundamental.” One conspicuously missing, however, was the right to an education. America was primarily an agrarian culture, and education, especially higher education, was viewed as a privilege reserved for the children of the rich and (...)

If there is one universal question that haunts all human beings at some point in their lives, it is, “Why do we die?” Death, after all, is the great illogic. It ultimately claims all, the rich and the poor, the mighty and the small, the good and the evil. Death also has the capability to make most human pursuits—such as the quest for wealth, fame and power—vacuous and fleeting. Given this reality, I have often wondered why so many people are still willing to (...)

HOW MUCH CORRUPTION CAN DEMOCRACY ENDURE?

How much corruption can a “democracy” endure before it ceases to be a democracy? If five venal, mendacious, duplicitous, amoral, biased and (dare I say it) satanic Supreme Court “justices”—John Roberts, Samuel Alito, Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas and Anthony Kennedy—have their way, America will soon find out. In several previous articles for Pravda.Ru, I have consistently warned how the Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United decision is one of the (...)

Imagine, if you will, that the United States government passes a law banning advertisers from sponsoring commercials on Rush Limbaugh’s radio show or Rupert Murdoch’s Fox (Faux) “News” Network. On one hand, there would be two decided advantages to this ban: The National IQ would undoubtedly increase several percentage points, and manipulative pseudo-journalists would no longer be able to appeal to the basest instincts in human nature for ratings and profit while (...)

A question I’ve frequently been asked since I began writing for Pravda.Ru in 2003 is, “Why did you become disillusioned with the practice of law?” This question is understandable, particularly since, in most people’s minds, being an attorney is synonymous with wealth and political power. I’ve always been reluctant to answer this question for fear it will discourage conscientious and ethical people from pursuing careers in the legal profession—a (...)
