U.S. used banned weapons in Fallujah - Health ministry

An official in Iraq’s health ministry said that the U.S. used banned weapons in Fallujah

Dr. Khalid ash-Shaykhli, an official at Iraq’s health ministry, said that the U.S. military used internationally banned weapons during its deadly offensive in the city of Fallujah.

Dr. ash-Shaykhli was assigned by the ministry to assess the health conditions in Fallujah following the November assault there.

He said that researches, prepared by his medical team, prove that U.S. occupation forces used internationally prohibited substances, including mustard gas, nerve gas, and other burning chemicals in their attacks in the war-torn city.

The health official announced his findings at a news conference in the health ministry building in Baghdad.

The press conference was attended by more than 20 Iraqi and foreign media networks, including the Iraqi ash-Sharqiyah TV network, the Iraqi as-Sabah newspaper, the U.S. Washington Post and the Knight-Ridder service.

Dr. ash-Shaykhli started the conference by reporting the current health conditions of the Fallujah residents. He said that the city is still suffering from the effects of chemical substances and other types of weapons that cause serious diseases over the long term.

Asked whether limited nuclear weapons were also used by U.S. forces in Fallujah, Dr. ash-Shaykhli said; “What I saw during our research in Fallujah leads me to me believe everything that has been said about that battle.

“I absolutely do not exclude their use of nuclear and chemical substances, since all forms of nature were wiped out in that city. I can even say that we found dozens, if not hundreds, of stray dogs, cats, and birds that had perished as a result of those gasses.”

Dr. ash-Shaykhli promised to send the findings of the researches to responsible bodies inside Iraq and abroad.

Fallujah residents said napalm gas was used

During the U.S. offensive, Fallujah residents reported that they saw “melted” bodies in the city, which suggests that U.S. forces used napalm gas, a poisonous cocktail of polystyrene and jet fuel that makes the human body melt.

In November, Labour MPs in the UK demanded Prime Minister Tony Blair to confront the Commons over the use of napalm gas in Fallujah.

Furious critics have also demanded that Blair threatens the U.S. to pullout British forces from Iraq unless the U.S. stops using the world’s deadliest weapon.

The United Nations banned the use of the napalm gas against civilians in 1980 after pictures of a naked wounded girl in Vietnam shocked the world.

The United States, which didn’t endorse the convention, is the only nation in the world still using the deadly weapon.

America has caused all wars since World War Two. America is responsible for over ten million deaths of innocent men, women, and children since 1945. America has the worlds largest stockpile of weapons of mass destruction. Horrific nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons that defy description. Why does the worlds only super power need such weapons? What is it that frightens America so much? To quote the great Australian poet Henry Lawson.

"Do you think, you slaves of a thousand years to poverty, wealth and pride,

You can crush the spirit that has been free in a land that’s new and wide?

When you’ve scattered the last of the farmer bands, and the war for a while is over,

You will hold the land - ay, you’ll hold the land - the land that your rifles cover.

Till your gold has levelled each mountain range where a wounded man can hide,

Till your gold has lighted the moonless night on the plains where the rebels ride;

Till the future is proved, and the past is bribed from the son of the land’s dead lover -

You may hold the land - you may hold the land just as far as your rifles cover."

WE in America DON’T CAUSE WARS, We WIN THEM. IF every nation on the planet treated its people with respect, gave them RIGHTS and FREEDOMS instead of using them to test chemical and biological weapons on, we as Americans wouldn’t interfere. and WHY do we have all the weapons? YOU ANSWERED YOUR OWN QUESTION MORON WE ARE THE SUPERPOWER BECAUSE WE HAVE THEM, ASK RUSSIA WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU GIVE UP YOUR WEAPONS. You really are NOT impressing anyone quoting some long dead poet, really HOW LAME!What frightens America you ask????? ill tell you the thought of people living without the BASIC FREEDOMS WE HAVE IN AMERICA THAT IS WHAT FRIGHTENS US!!!! Well that and the fact that those same people are too cowardly and weak to TAKE THERE FREEDOM from the OPPRESSORS that keep it from them! And America is NOT that oppressor! To Quote a GREAT AMERICAN "Freedom Must Occasionally be renewed with the blood of patriots". General Patton.

In a statement just prior to the seige of the city the leaders of the resistance in Fallujah denounced Zaqarwi and said that he is merely being used as an excuse by the US to destroy the city. They also stated that the bulk of the resistance fighters in the city were Iraqis, and this was more or less confirmed, albiet begrudgingly, by the US General in command of the operation.
With all of the media hype following the seige about "torture houses" and "chemical weapons’ labs" if the resistance fighters had been using chemical weapons against US and Iraqi troops it would have made headlines. While what you are saying is plausible in the sense that a resistance group committing an atrocity and then blaming it on the US could be a tactic designed to make the occupation even less popular. It may be plausible, but in the end I think that judging from the means in which the US has utilized all resistance atrocities, real or imagined, to further its own interests it would be a stretch to think that they would miss such an opportunity to capitalize on something as major as this.
The reports about the use of chemical weapons is coming from a member of the US-appointed Ministery of Health, and with the early position of Allawi that NO civilians had been killed in Fallujah this statement comes as being quite credible.

There is no such thing as "Napalm gas". It is not a gas. Mustard gas hasn’t been used in many years and will hurt the people who use it too. The allegation that the US used nuclear weapons is so preposterous that how could you ever believe it? A simple geiger counter could detect it. As far as WMDs, the 757s that hit the World Trade Center qualify. No wait, that was Al Quada. I wonder what else the good doctor is mistaken about?

YOU don’t know what the hell you’er talking about because if you did a simple Google search, you would find the interview of U.S. Maj.-General Jim Amos by the San Deigo Union Tribune, ADMITTING NAPALM was USED on the attack of Iraq.

As far as "naplam gas"nobody that reported the attack on Fallujah including Dahr Jamail or Sgrena, who were THERE, unlike you, used that term. So you’er just making it up as you go along.
In addtition to the above documented interview, Global Security and The UK Mirror also reported the use of Napalm, which was banned in the 1980 UN convention and GUESS who refused to sign the treaty, who refused to stop using Naplam, the hideous weapon that burns the skin and flesh off the human body, the so-called "leader of the free world".....now the new emerging Fascist state groomed for world wide destruction by the NEOCONS.

The U.S. also upgraded the terrifing mixture of jet fuel and polystyrene with kerosene, instead of fuel. So using a different petroleum distillate STILL makes it NAPALM.

As far as why the U.S. would use it, besides not giving a damn how they kill, it’s used as a psychological weapon of terror, moron. It’s cheap, destructive and if you read Dahr Jamail residents
of Fallujah have reported that U.S. military have been seen washing the streets and removing dirt
from many areas, obviously to remove any evidence.

So get educated idiot and stop drinking the neocon kool-aid and start thinking for yourself!

I can do this without stooping to insulting your intelligence.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS "NAPALM GAS"

As I made perfectly clear, "Napalm is not a gas". Which to most English speaking peoples means that there is another product called "Napalm". (A flammable jelly usually delivered in a bomb) It is NOT a gas. Now do you understand the difference?

I however refer to the war as the "Liberation of Iraq" although the popular press doesn’t often use that reference as often as it should, There are many many wonderful things happening now in the rebuilding of Iraq. Now that the country of Iraq has accepted democracy and and when it no longer represents a threat to the U.S. and Iraq’s own neighbors, the war will be over.

Yes, I do know what I’m talking about.

I would invoite the poster to carefully study the initial eye-witness reports, which started circulating some time ago. The reports are very clear that the chemical weapons were delivered by aerial bombing and/or artillery. This is not in keeping with internation law going back even before WWI (IANAL, etc and I have no idea whether the original treaties have been superceded by later conventions).

The use of chemical weapons in Iraq by the US has been well documented and seems to be well known by those outside the inbedded journalist community. As others said, why wasn’t this widely reported? Also note that the use of these weapons was the subject of Giuliana Sgrena’s research at the time she was abducted. Like it or not, this story isn’t going away.

As a Canadian, I feel that the American invasion of Iraq was ordered by a short sighted president with a hidden agenda. It is abundantly clear that the invasion was not carried out to bring democracy to Iraq as the American propaganda machine would like people to belive.

However, after reading this article - I’d have to say that this is an example of propaganda at the other end of the spectrum. I am not trying to defend anybody here - but this story should be viewed with extreme skepticism and many grains of salt.

I’m not saying that the use of weaponized mustard gas and napalm isn’t possible - but what caught my attention was the claimed use of "limited nuclear weapons." If such was the case, not only would radioactive evidence be readily verifiable by more than just one doctor conducting research in that city - but American occupying torces themselves would be at extreme risk from their own weapons - evidenced by the terrifying effects of radiation sickness. Surely, it would have to gradually affect others outside of Falluja. Radioactive contaminants tend to spread and affect vast areas - "limited" or not.

Even if suppression by goverment was attempted, radiation sickness is not hard to identify and information would surely leak - particularly if coalition forces were affected.

No, the use of "limited nuclear weapons" makes no sense on a tactical level either. There would be no advantage to it’s use. Additionally, the American Gov’t would most likely not risk using it experimentally on Fallujan rebels considering the shaky support that the war is already receiving and what exposure of its use could potentially do.

The story - on this level at least - lacks credibility, particularly when its only source is from one doctor. Furthermore, the story does not say that photographic evidence of horribly disfigured people clearly suffering from effects of napalm or mustard gas were tabled during the news conference. Clearly, this would have been a first step in establishing the validity of the claims.

No, for a US administration that fumbles through it’s term - and whose soldiers almost kill a freed italian journalist - I cannot give the American administration the credit that they would have effectively suppressed this so well.

In any event, I look forward to the release of Dr. ash-Shaykhli’s findings.

I wasn’t going to reply to a page I don’t frequent but I thought I would point this out:

The ’limited nuclear weapons’ are in the form of Depleted Uranium Rounds which the US doesn’t hide it uses. These rounds are far better then normal rounds but have the side effect of vaporizing into a gas like state after impact. In this state the Uranium does disburse over an area. The military likes to say that, because, it is depleted there isn’t a great radioactive charge but the truth of the matter is these things, in the ton and tons used, do create a higher radioactivity level that HAS been recorded since Gulf War 1. Iraq and more so parts of it that saw higher fighting, are flooded with higher rates of radiation. Many symptoms from ’gulf war syndrome’ can easily be seen as low level radioactive poisoning. This is not hidden at all though, and never has been, the reports on what these weapons do are all out there.

 Little Dragon.

Why does this article not surprise me after all these years, I can not understand
why the United Nations and every other responsible body not challenge them on this
and ask the USAbusers to show their weapons of mass distruction to the world. They
are challenging the world . Now they say China is their next threat , the say Syria must
get out of Lebenon and they do not belong there but they choose to march onto a
country in the so called name of peace. I deserted from the US Army in 67 and have
lived in peace in Canada ever since, I am proud of what I did for myself and my family.
They must be challenged for what they used Fallujah. Bush must be brought to justice
so the rest of the world will learn to live in peace according to Gods way. I am so proud of the Canadian Government for saying no to their missiles bull#$%@^ program. How can or how did the

one tenth smarter then the ones who voted him in. We must call him on this movement which is in question.

This story only scratches the surface. Mark 77 firebombs are being used to be specific. They are white phosphorous bombs and technically not napalm. Big deal that the name isn’t the same, the result is. Cluster bombs are also being used. I am from America. Our country is ill informed and apathetic. I cry for this atrocity and offer my deepest but worthless apologies. God help us.
This from Dahr Jamail:

He told me he has watched the military use bulldozers to push the soil into piles and load it onto trucks to carry away. This was done in the Julan and Jimouriya quarters of the city, which is of course where the heaviest fighting occurred during the siege, as this was where resistance was the fiercest. “At least two kilometers of soil were removed,” he explained, “Exactly as they did at Baghdad Airport after the heavy battles there during the invasion and the Americans used their special weapons.”

He explained that in certain areas where the military used “special munitions” 200 square meters of soil was being removed from each blast site.In addition, many of his friends have told him that the military brought in water tanker trucks to power blast the streets, although he hadn’t seen this himself. “They went around to every house and have shot the water tanks,” he continued, “As if they are trying to hide the evidence of chemical weapons in the water, but they only did this in some areas, such as Julan and in the souk (market) there as well.”

“In the mornings I found Fallujah empty, as if nobody lives in it,” he’d said, “Even poisonous gases have been used in Fallujah-they used everything-tanks, artillery, infantry, poison gas. Fallujah has been bombed to the ground. Nothing is left.”

The American President is guilty of the supreme crime of aggression as such is guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Now to add to this he is also guilty of the crime of genocide as that is what Fallujah was all about: a deliberate attempt to destroy an entire city and its population to use as an example to the rest of Iraq not to resist their illegal invasion. His infamy will last longer than Hitler. Bush is even more dangerous. He must be stopped.

IN Falluja thousands of innocent civilians, men, women and children were torched alive with napalm, chemical weapons and equally deadly depleted uranium weapons, which leave a radioactive calling card in their wake to kill indiscriminately for centuries to come. All the illegal weapons that the US used in Falluja are banned "weapons of mass destruction" under many charters, including UN rulings. Not that this would worry the US government. In the extreme irony it went to war in Iraq based on a total fallacy and lie - Ie that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. Subsequently the invader uses weapons of mass destruction on the very people it is callously saying it is "liberating". This is mass genocide and those responsible (together with the mainstream media who support this war) should be arrested and charged with crimes against humanity.

I agree...hold them accountable to the world for crimes against humanity. Then, let the parents and grandparents of the killed and maimed service persons have them for a day. When they’ve extracted their pound of flesh, give them to the Iraqi citizens who’ve suffered the loss of their loved ones. Jail is too good for them. Don’t forget to include Bush’s brain, Karl Rove. I heard a fellow hillbilly say today that ".....by the end of this four years, they’ll be a camel in every garage!"
The courts won’t help us, the media won’t tell us, our representatives can’t hear us, and many neighbors don’t believe us. Sure gonna be tough on our kids and grandkids...this legacy we’re gonna leave ’em!

The lies, cheating, deception by Bush and his crowd, a collection of dishonest war mongers , the silence of the media make the heritage our ancestors died for and worked for a sad, sad, joke.

If you do nothing to end this nightmare, you deserve to have every liberty, every civil right, every hope ad aspiration buried forever.

It is too late to do anything about what has happened to our country the fascists have control and we can never regain power from the military industrial complex. While corporate America pays no taxes on the money they make which is most of it folks, the underclass picks up the tab and look what they are spending it on...war porfiteering to the tune of billions and billions and billions of dollars and now they do not want to honor their debts having spent all of the social security funds, no now they want the sucker taxpayers to just eat the loss and work their entire lives until death to keep on paying for this national corruption. But even worse is the murdering this government is doing and blaming all of us here for their actions while the propaganda ministry spews out lies 24/7/365 and cheers the criminals in our government on. When are Americans going to get a guts full and stop letting them do this? When will people here finally get enough brain power to take back the moral high ground if not the country?

Going by many of the comments here, it would appear many Americans foolishly and stupidly still believe the garbadge they are being fed by their masters, despite massive evidance to the contrary.
Worse, it would also appear via these same comments, that many Americans actually support these actions themselves .
They don’t mind, going round the World, kicking people in the head, raping their women and stealing their assets, before destroying their homes and in many case their lives and livelyhoods as well, without exhibiting any concern whatever for their murderous actions.
The question that plagues me immensly, is how can these Americans fool themselves into believing there will be no price to pay on their part for their actions ?????
And when the time comes for retribution,(as it surely will) these very same people will cry crocodile tears and demand oceans of blood in revenge.
For my part, I can see no good whatever, ever eventuating from these actions by America, I see nothing but war and continual bloodshed unless countries band together and ditch the U.S. bonds and force the U.S. to go bust.
Sure, it’ll hurt us all, but somehow I suspect the pain will be far less then what their administration has in store for us all.

American soldiers are already paying for what has happened in Iraq. Estimates of nearly 30% returning soldiers suffer serious medical problems from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). There are estimates of thousands of others still fighting in Iraq, that refuse to get medical treatment, because of macho-ism between men.

Guys,

Please take off the tin foil hats. What advantage would there be for the US to use tactical nukes and mustard gas in Fallujah???

Mustard gas is so unsafe the US is eliminating it from the stockpile as we speak and even tactical nukes would have caused such a large explosion it would have been seen by every reporter in Baghdad.

If I recall correctly, Zarqawi was Al-queda’s chemical weapons expert and we found chemical weapons lab in Fallujah. Wouldn’t it make a little more sense that we hit these labs with conventional weapons and spread some of these toxins into the air?

No, that would be too simple an explanation. Let’s go with Nukes and Mustard Gas!!

To all of you who think the US wouldn’t use nuclear weapons against an enemy, even if it’s own army were in danger, look back to 1991 and Gulf War I.

The total amount of military personnel who served in Iraq in 1991 was nearly 550,000. Presently, there are over 11,000 dead soldiers from depleted uranium shells, used by our military, to disable Iraqi tanks and other military vehicles. Nearly 250,000 are now seriously ill, and or hospitalized.

Get your heads out of your asses.

Fallujah was hit with any and all weapons the US had in its arsenal. It was too bad for anyone, including the US military to have been in the way. Fallujah had to be taken by any means.

My dear fellow Americans,
Having lived in a communist state and in the west I learned one thing about propaganda. Everything that the US said about the communists was true, unfortunatly everything the commmunists said about the west was also true. Good propaganda tells truth but does not tell everything. So please keep your eyes open to both sides of the story. Thank you.

My dear fellow who lived in a communist state,
We will keep our eyes open. But the truth is that there is no truth, every government in this world lies to its people and to the people of other countries, precisely to protect itself from propagandistics who dont always tell the truth no matter if the propaganda is good or bad. Propaganda is highly fueled by emotions, since its the spread of ideas. Therefore it can be misleading sometimes. We’ll keep our eyes open to both sides of the story, if you promise to keep your books open. Books by publishers from all around the world. So you can not only read both sides of the stories, but also understand them. Peace.

Did the U.S. Use "Illegal" Weapons in Fallujah?
Media allegations claim the U.S. used outlawed weapons during combat in Iraq

The fighting in Fallujah, Iraq has led to a number of widespread myths including false charges that the United States is using chemical weapons such napalm and poison gas. None of these allegations are true.

Qatar-based Internet site Islam Online was one of the first to spread the false chemical weapons claim. On November 10, 2004, it reported that U.S. troops were allegedly using "chemical weapons and poisonous gas" in Fallujah. ("US Troops Reportedly Gassing Fallujah") It sourced this claim to Al-Quds Press, which cited only anonymous sources for its allegation.

The inaccurate Islam Online story has been posted on hundreds of Web sites.

On November 12, 2004, the U.S. Department of Defense issued a denial of the chemical weapons charge, stating:

"The United States categorically denies the use of chemical weapons at anytime in Iraq, which includes the ongoing Fallujah operation. Furthermore, the United States does not under any circumstance support or condone the development, production, acquisition, transfer or use of chemical weapons by any country. All chemical weapons currently possessed by the United States have been declared to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and are being destroyed in the United States in accordance with our obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention."

To its credit, Islam Online ran a Nov. 25, 2004, story carrying the U.S. denial.

In both stories, Islam Online noted that U.S. forces had used napalm-like incendiary weapons during the march to Baghdad in the spring of 2003. Although all napalm in the U.S. arsenal had been destroyed by 2001, Mark-77 firebombs, which have a similar effect to napalm, were used against enemy positions in 2003.

The repetition of this story on Islam Online’s led to further misinformation. Some readers did not distinguish between what had happened in the spring of 2003, during the march to Baghdad, and in Fallujah in November 2004. They mistakenly thought napalm-like weapons had been used in Fallujah, which is not true. No Mark-77 firebombs have been used in operations in Fallujah.

On Nov. 11, 2004, the Nov. 10 Islam Online story was reposted by the New York Transfer News Web site, with the inaccurate headline "Resistance Says US Using Napalm, Gas in Fallujah."

The headline was wrong in two ways. First, as explained above, Islam Online was incorrect in claiming that U.S. forces were using poison gas in Fallujah. Second, the New York Transfer News misread the Islam Online story to mean that U.S. forces were currently using napalm-like weapons in Fallujah. But Islam Online had never claimed this; it had only talked about napalm use in 2003.

The false napalm allegation then took on a life of its own. Further postings on the Internet repeated or recreated the error that the New York Transfer News had made, which eventually appeared in print media. For example, on Nov. 28, 2004, the UK’s Sunday Mirror inaccurately claimed U.S. forces were "secretly using outlawed napalm gas" in Fallujah.

The Sunday Mirror story was wrong in two ways.

First, napalm or napalm-like incendiary weapons are not outlawed. International law permits their use against military forces, which is how they were used in 2003.

Second, as noted above, no Mark-77 firebombs were used in Fallujah.

The Sunday Mirror’s phrasing "napalm gas" is also revealing. Napalm is a gel, not a gas. Why did the Sunday Mirror describe it as a gas?

It may be that, somewhere along the line, a sloppy reader read the inaccurate New York Transfer News headline, "Resistance Says US Using Napalm, Gas in Fallujah," and omitted the comma between napalm and gas, yielding the nonsensical "napalm gas."

Next, the Sunday Mirror’s misinformation about “napalm gas” was reported in identical articles on Nov. 28 by aljazeera.com and islamonline.com. These two Web sites, which are owned by the same company – Al Jazeera Publishing – are deceptive look-alike Web sites that masquerade as the English-language sites of the popular Qatar-based Arabic-language satellite television station al Jazeera and the popular Islam Online Web site, which is islamonline.net.

Finally, some news accounts have claimed that U.S. forces have used "outlawed" phosphorus shells in Fallujah. Phosphorus shells are not outlawed. U.S. forces have used them very sparingly in Fallujah, for illumination purposes. They were fired into the air to illuminate enemy positions at night, not at enemy fighters.

There is a great deal of misinformation feeding on itself about U.S. forces allegedly using "outlawed" weapons in Fallujah. The facts are that U.S. forces are not using any illegal weapons in Fallujah or anywhere else in Iraq.

We are in an age in which information is constantly in flux and affected by all sorts of agenda’s and possible retributional actions from those it injures. Flex not the muscles of false information and instead flex the muscles of your own mind. Evil sows dissent amoung mankind that we may slay and attack each other. To declare the United States as a country, as a whole evil and perverse; is entirely untrue. I will not confirm or deny the possible use of chemical weapons; I have not the information to prove it either way. Though if I could place my money I would say with some esecurity hat this information is incorrect. In fact I would suggest it is propoganda. As for all Americans who would believe their country is capable of such action. I would encourage you to bring it to your Senator’s attention and question. They have the authority to realease any information necassary. This will be my only post. Understand the Unites States is not Communist the system is completely implausible in our type of society. We are also not imperialists, If we were; do you think we would have remained unexpansive for so long? Our borders are defined, and threats against America range from Terrorism, Economy failures, resource troubles; and all number of things that threaten the current status of American life. Americans are people, as anyone else. Do not bring religion into this, that is the start of troubles that cannot be cast aside; for the religious side will never let an event go to rest. They will always demand satisfaction in an ever more violent and increasingly dangerous manner. Farewell, this is my only posting. - DRAXTON

A message for theose Anti-Democracy,

America is the largest and most sucessful superpower in the world, nothing is going to change that, quit being jealous that your country is to stuck up and nimbleminded to give things as simple as the abilty to speak your mind to its own people. Envy my simple function of speaking you dolts. (freedom of speech...i love our bill of rights look it up nimrods.)

For our own that are for Democracy,

We police the world, thats what you do when you have the most dangerous and world ending cock of a WMD inside the the real country pants in this superpowers struggle. And no, im not checking the progress of the replies like the rest of you losers, im too busy enjoying the smell of charr broiled 3rd world children.

Neo-Nazis and far-right protesters in Ukraine 3 live-stream

The far-right in Ukraine are acting as the vanguard of a protest movement that is being reported as pro-democracy. The situation on the ground is not as simple as pro-EU and trade versus pro-Putin and Russian hegemony in the region. When US Senator John McCain dined with Ukraine’s opposition leaders in December, he shared a table and later a stage with the leader of the extreme far-right Svoboda party Oleh Tyahnybok. This is Oleh Tyahnybok, he has claimed a "Moscow-Jewish mafia" (...)

International initiative to stop the war in Syria Yes to democracy, no to foreign intervention!

Your support here: http://www.peaceinsyria.org/support.php We, the undersigned, who are part of an international civil society increasingly worried about the awful bloodshed of the Syrian people, are supporting a political initiative based on the results of a fact-finding mission which some of our colleagues undertook to Beirut and Damascus in September 2012. This initiative consists in calling for a delegation of highranking personalities and public figures to go to Syria in order to (...)

At first glance, the results of America’s 2012 election appear to be a triumph for social, racial, and economic justice and progress in the United States: California voters passed a proposition requiring the rich to shoulder their fair share of the tax burden; Two states, Colorado and Washington, legalized the recreational use of marijuana, while Massachusetts approved the use of marijuana for medical purposes; Washington and two other states, Maine and Maryland, legalized same-sex (...)

I’VE DECIDED TO "WASTE" MY VOTE
Sunday 28 October
by : David R. Hoffman, Legal Editor of Pravda.Ru
In a 2004 episode of Comedy Central’s animated series South Park, an election was held to determine whether the new mascot for the town’s elementary school would be a “giant douche” or a “turd sandwich.” Confronted with these two equally unpalatable choices, one child, Stan Marsh, refused to vote at all, which resulted in his ostracization and subsequent banishment from the town. Although this satirical vulgarity was intended as a commentary on the two (...)

HIGHER EDUCATION IN AMERICA: DREAM OR NIGHTMARE? PART IV
Friday 28 September
by : David R. Hoffman, Legal Editor of Pravda.Ru
PART I PART II PART III If there is one major inconsistency in life, it is that young people who know little more than family, friends and school are suddenly, at the age of eighteen, supposed to decide what they want to do for the rest of their lives. Unfortunately, because of their limited life experiences, the illusions they have about certain occupations do not always comport to the realities. I discovered this the first time I went to college. About a year into my studies, I (...)

HIGHER EDUCATION IN AMERICA: DREAM OR NIGHTMARE? PART III

PART I PART II PART IV Disillusioned with the machinations of so-called “traditional” colleges, I became an adjunct instructor at several “for-profit” colleges. Thanks largely to the power and pervasiveness of the Internet, “for-profit” colleges (hereinafter for-profits) have become a growing phenomenon in America. They have also been the subject of much political debate and the focus of a Frontline special entitled College Inc. Unlike traditional (...)

HIGHER EDUCATION IN AMERICA: DREAM OR NIGHTMARE? PART II
Friday 28 September
by : David R. Hoffman, Legal Editor of Pravda.Ru
PART I PART III PART IV Several years ago, a young lady came into the college where I was teaching to inquire about a full-time instructor’s position in the sociology department. She was advised that only adjunct positions were available. Her response was, “No thanks. Once an adjunct, always an adjunct.” Her words still echo in my mind. Even as colleges and universities raise their tuition costs, they are relying more and more on adjunct instructors. Adjuncts are (...)

HIGHER EDUCATION IN AMERICA: DREAM OR NIGHTMARE? PART I
Friday 28 September
by : David R. Hoffman, Legal Editor of Pravda.Ru
PART II PART III PART IV When The Bill of Rights was added to the United States Constitution over two hundred years ago, Americans were blessed with many rights considered to be “fundamental.” One conspicuously missing, however, was the right to an education. This was not surprising given the tenor of the times. America was primarily an agrarian culture, and education, especially higher education, was viewed as a privilege reserved for the children of the rich and (...)

If there is one universal question that haunts all human beings at some point in their lives, it is, “Why do we die?” Death, after all, is the great illogic. It ultimately claims all, the rich and the poor, the mighty and the small, the good and the evil. Death also has the capability to make most human pursuits—such as the quest for wealth, fame and power—vacuous and fleeting. Given this reality, I have often wondered why so many people are still willing to (...)

HOW MUCH CORRUPTION CAN DEMOCRACY ENDURE?

How much corruption can a “democracy” endure before it ceases to be a democracy? If five venal, mendacious, duplicitous, amoral, biased and (dare I say it) satanic Supreme Court “justices”—John Roberts, Samuel Alito, Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas and Anthony Kennedy—have their way, America will soon find out. In several previous articles for Pravda.Ru, I have consistently warned how the Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United decision is one of the (...)

Imagine, if you will, that the United States government passes a law banning advertisers from sponsoring commercials on Rush Limbaugh’s radio show or Rupert Murdoch’s Fox (Faux) “News” Network. On one hand, there would be two decided advantages to this ban: The National IQ would undoubtedly increase several percentage points, and manipulative pseudo-journalists would no longer be able to appeal to the basest instincts in human nature for ratings and profit while (...)

LIVE, from the State that brought you Senator Joseph McCarthy, Wisconsin voters now proudly present, fresh from his recall election victory, Governor Scott Walker! At first glance, it is almost unfathomable that anyone with a modicum of intelligence would have voted to retain Scott Walker as Wisconsin’s governor. This, after all, is a man who openly declared he is trying to destroy the rights of workers through a “divide and conquer” strategy; who received 61% of the (...)

A question I’ve frequently been asked since I began writing for Pravda.Ru in 2003 is, “Why did you become disillusioned with the practice of law?” This question is understandable, particularly since, in most people’s minds, being an attorney is synonymous with wealth and political power. I’ve always been reluctant to answer this question for fear it will discourage conscientious and ethical people from pursuing careers in the legal profession—a (...)
