By European Left 1. The agreement on a mandate for a new IGC to work out a new EU Treaty decided by the Heads of State during the last European Council is a clear sign of the lack of added value of this governmental Europe for the improvement of citizens’ life. The governments have decided to include in a new Treaty and through amendments of the previous ones the main part of the Constitutional Treaty – rejected by the French and Dutch peoples. The Party of the European Left criticises this decision for two reasons: its methods and its substance. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL FRIENDS OF BELLACIAO

The Party of the European Left (EL) has appealed to the heads of the European Union (EU) and European governments to play a more active role in the present conflict in the Middle East. In a statement adopted August 1 by the EL executive committee, the organisation says it is bewildered by “the weak, irresponsible position of the EU and European governments with seats on the UN Security Council, faced with the necessity to exert maximum pressure on all (...) 1 comment MIDEAST: FAUSTO BERTINOTTI, CONDOLENCES FOR ITALIAN KILLED IN JERUSALEM

Rome, August 11 - A 24-year-old Italian aid worker was stabbed to death in Jerusalem on Thursday evening. Israeli police described the murder of Angelo Frammartino as a politically motivated "act of terrorism". Police detained five young Palestinians during the night, but later released them without charge. Frammartino, a law student from the town of Monterotondo near Rome, was working as a volunteer at a summer camp for Palestinian children run by Italian trade union CGIL. He was stabbed twice in the back and once in the throat at about 8pm during an evening out in the Israeli capital. People in his home town described him as a polite, cheerful, conscientious young man. 8 comments Appeal to all Heads of States and Governments of the European Union Member countries and other European States

Il Manifesto Fausto Bertinotti, Secretary of the Italian Communist Refoundation Party (PRC), talks to Valentino Parlato, founding editor of the Communist daily Il Manifesto, about the challenges facing the next center-left government, the challenges to Marxist orthodoxy posed by the powerful rise of democratic mass movements, and the development of the Party of the European Left, a project which Bertinotti is leading in Italy. (Translated by Vittorio Longhi) These days much has been said and written about Fausto Bertinotti, the political shifts he has taken, and his innovative and even daring approach to the problems faced by the Italian and European left. One afternoon recently, the editor-in-chief of Il Manifesto, Gabriele Polo, political editor Cosimo Rossi, and I went to talk with him. The result was a useful and thought-provoking conversation, full of interesting digressions. 2 comments Europe’s radical left is still struggling to articulate new strategies for social, economic and political change

by Hilary Wainwright Manchester From my desk in the north of England, the grass seems considerably greener—or the poppies redder—across the water in Europe. Here in Britain political look-alikes compete frenetically for the center ground, and politicians of the radical left are sidelined by a grossly disproportionate electoral system. In contrast, Norway’s Left Socialist Party is part of the government; Italy’s radical Partito della Rifondazione Comunista (...) General Election in Italy 2006: Great success for the Partito della Rifondazione Comunista in Italy!
Wednesday April 12 2006 - 14:19 - By : Rome
Information on General Election in Italy 2006 The result of our party is excellent: Rifondazione has increased its votes everywhere, both in percentage and in absolute votes: from 5% achieved at the 2001 election to 5.8% at the Chamber of Deputies or lower house (from 1,867,712 votes to 2,229,604) and 7.4% at the Senate, the upper house (from 1,707,175 to 2,518,624). 41 MPs will represent our party at the lower house (instead of 11) and 27 senators at the Senate (instead of 3). This is the largest parliamentary representation ever achieved by Rifondazione. We are moreover the second-largest party at the lower house and the third-largest one at the Senate within the Union coalition. On last 9 and 10 April elections for the lower house and the upper house (for voters over 25) took place with about 47 million Italians eligible to vote. The turnout was very high: 83.6%, which is the largest participation in the past fifteen years. 4 comments France’s political crisis grows as 3 million take to streets

by Angelique Chrisafis in Paris Police fought running battles with rioters in central Paris last night as youths attacked officers with bangers, bottles and concrete at the end of a mass demonstration against a youth employment law that has caused a political crisis for Jacques Chirac’s ruling party. Trade unionists and student leaders said up to three million people took to the streets across France yesterday - the second time in eight days that the country has seen its biggest street demonstrations in almost 40 years. The protests, including one by hundreds of thousands of students and scholars who marched through central Paris, were mainly peaceful. 7 comments A call from the Collettivo Bellaciao General election in Italy

Since 1 May 2004 we have been living in an enlarged European Union of 25 member states, witnessing new developments in the European continent that are added daily. People in all European countries - no matter whether EU members or not - wonder what our continent will look like in the future. It is not only possible today to build up "the other Europe"; it is essential. 4 comments Italian primary elections : the list of polling stations in the world

Dear friends, we would like to ask your help in disseminating this message. There will be elections in Italy on the 6th of April 2006, and in preparation for this the coalition of the left is holding primaries to choose the candidate who will run against Berlusconi. We recently formed the Bellaciao Collective of Great Britain, a group dedicated to supporting the political activities of the progressive sections of the Italian diaspora in the UK (more on the group at the end of this message). Through this group we have now obtained the establishment of a polling station in Manchester for the primaries of the left coalition. |
