CONSIDERATION

By Peter Fredson

January 24, 2006

I wonder if President George Bush has ever thought about what his actions reflect, or what consequences will result? Does Bush ever deliberate, reflect, or contemplate? Does he ever recite a little mantra to help his mind instruct his body? Does Bush ever show concern, compassion, respect, sympathy toward other people, other cultures, other religions?

Although I have been a Bush watcher for several years I find no trace of concern for his actions.

He seems to act as though inhabiting a fantasy world of his own making, where he is universally thought to be kind, courageous, heroic, spiritual, and even a sort of fraternity messiah for the over-privileged fundamentalists and neoconservatives of his day. This is reflected by his play-acting out his fantasy of being a “noble warrior”, a “Christian crusader”, and even a philosopher in the Leo Strauss tradition of preemption, aggression, bullying and a go-to-hell ambition.

His theatrical performance of landing on a warship in full warrior gear, including codpiece, with a huge sign announcing “MISSION ACCOMPLISHED” was certainly the highlight tip-off of his career showing his pathetic aspirations, inspiration, and avid desire to “leave a legacy.”

Facts play no part in the Bush play-acting. Imaginative fiction is his subject, fantasy his day-dream. He has been indoctrinated heavily by Christian Fundamentalists, corporate cronies, fraternity friends, and political friends of his father to the point where he does not really hold any independent opinion. He behaves like an automaton to stimuli, ever eager to repeat any action though it may have failed miserably.

He never seems to learn from his mistakes, because, in his mind, they never happened.

He prefers absolute faith, unyielding belief, in things unknown and beyond comprehension. While some children have invisible companions that accompany them on daily playground activities, Bush has the Supreme Creator of the Entire Universe at his beck and call.

To many people his behavior resembles that of a dry-drunk, a sociopath, a narcissist, or an ego-maniac with a craving for affection and wealth. He physically and in some actions resembles the personable Ted Bundy, mass murderer without conscience, compassion, pity or concern.

What part his constant cronies play in his actions is a matter of great concern. How much instruction, advice, has he taken from Dick Cheney, of the savage snarl and quick epithet? How much fantasy has he absorbed from the attentions of trickster Karl Rove?

How much has Bush been influenced by the sly and dogmatic attention of several absolutist fundamentalists who have convinced him of his own saint-like spirituality and imperial will? How much influence has been swallowed from the horde of corrupt lobbyists that swarm about him like flies, anxious enough for a quick word with him that will only cost them several thousand dollars but will probably reward them with Tax money worth several millions of dollars?

How much has influence-peddling influenced Bush? It certainly has affected his favorite Senators.

How much has the sanguinary Donald Rumsfeld influenced Bush? How much damage has the fascist-minded Ashcroft had on the Bush psyche? How much ego has been massaged and stroked by the several lawyers who have informed Bush that legislation and constitution does not necessarily apply to any of Bush actions?

How much have the Republicans on the Judicial Committee influenced the demise of democracy for a fascist theocracy and a unitary executive who has unlimited choice of action by allowing the selection of zealot partisans on the Supreme Court?

To take the opposite tack: how has Bush been able to influence the Republican Senators to become part of his Oval Office and to adjure their oaths to defend and protect the Constitution? How has Bush been able to destroy all the protection of separation of Church and State in a few years and allow unfettered access to Christian Dominionist and Reconstructionist proselytizers?

How has Bush been allowed to declare all criticism as treason or as dissent liable to warrantless detentions, to secret torture and abuse, to violate any airspace, any sovereignty, and send missiles screaming into any country that his intuition tells him that is EVIL?

What has happed to civil rights, to the many freedoms we once enjoyed, now turned over to mass spying on the public, to reading our mail, listening to our phone conversations, listening to conversations in our living and bed rooms, reading and analyzing all our e-mails for any possible hint of dissent, even double-checking our reading habits?

I would not be surprised to find that some agent somewhere is logging what TV stations we are watching, what radio programs we are tuned into, what DVDS we are watching, or even to find that a personal chip is now available to be inserted in our bodies so that Bush can tell at any moment where we are, what we are doing, what we are saying, to deliver an electric shock upon the slightest criticism, and to instruct us how to spend whatever income he will allow us to have.

Somewhere a Bushite is seething that an act of consensual sex is occurring and is figuring out some sort of legislation to stop it.

Somewhere a fundamentalist is figuring out that a literal reading of his Bible is appropriate and that witches must be burned to death, or disrespectful children be put to death, or that disbelief in his beliefs must be punished by death. In fact, death and destruction are favorite pastimes. Conquering EVIL of neighbors is a lot of fun, especially when accompanied by bunker buster bombs, cluster bombs, nuclear bombs, and other expensive instruments of Bush peacemaking equipment.

Our democracy may already be lost in a neoconservative fog, with the willing complicity of blind, deaf and dumb Senators and Representatives, who love the glory and noise of combat, to be carried out by others. Our Constitution may already have become obsolete, and replaced with a New Order Directive allowing only privileged people to live.

When Senators act as though contempt for the Constitution, an obvious grab for dictatorial power, and violating citizens rights is all perfectly normal, then we should legitimately be looking up impeachment proceedings and holding mass demonstrations to sweep the inert politicians out of office.

At this very moment some war department officer, in a small room, has probably made precise plans for Bush and Condi to destroy some small nation, in order to avoid the threat of terror. These plans obviously will deal largely with air strikes, unless Bush wants some portion of direct invasion from Iraq into Iran using ground troops and massive munitions display with perhaps tactical nuclear weapons as emergency back-up if plans backfire. Aggression and stupidity know no bounds, and Bush has a plentiful supply of both.

Is anyone worried that extension of a war started by lies, deceit and misinformation might be deliberately sought by Bush in order to retain his War President status and give him an excuse to exercise his imperial will? Is anyone worried that the destruction of war, not to mention its cost in lives and taxpayer dollars is being thrown down a drain, accomplishes nothing in an endless cycle, and merely serves as a profitable enterprise for those who stimulate war?

Why doesn’t Bush worry about our huge national and trade deficits, or consider that paying interest on our debt to foreign nations soon exceeds the entire national income of many nations? Or that the interest we must pay could have been used to rebuild New Orleans, refurbish our schools, clean up our air and water, beautify America, provide insurance and Medicare to millions of people, and too many other benefits to mention here?

Why the lack of consideration of consequences of Bush actions? Can anyone enlighten me how he can act in such care-free fashion? Why does he strut and swagger and smirk when our democracy is disappearing, inch by inch, daily. Can he keep blaming 9/11 indefinitely, at every opportunity, and coast on terror from without and from within his own inept and dangerous administration?

When can we cut our losses? When can we recover a damaged, sullied, and spit-upon Constitution?

When can we be free from worry that some agency of government, some secret police force, is watching every move we make at home and at work because Bush does not trust the public?
