Food Uniformity Bill Passes in the House Despite Widespread Opposition
Members of the House put special interests before public interest

Despite opposition from many environmental, health and consumer rights organizations, 39 state Attorneys General, 7 state Governors, the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture, the Association of Food and Drug Officials, the National Conference of State Legislators and the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, the United States House of Representatives passed H.R. 4167, The National Uniformity for Food Act, on Wednesday, March 8th.

Pushed forward by the food industry under the guise of promoting “uniformity” of food safety and labeling laws in the U.S., the bill requires all state food safety laws to be identical to the requirements of the Federal Food and Drug Administration. If the FDA has not passed a regulation on a food threat, then all state regulations on that threat would immediately be voided. And, since the states regulate many food safety issues not covered by the FDA, many food safety laws will be voided and replaced with no law at all.

The bill passed the house with a vote of 283 to 139 (see how your Representative voted here) even though there has NEVER been a hearing in either the House or the Senate on this “uniformity” bill.

While special interests trumped public interest in the House yesterday, we still have a strong chance to stop this dangerous legislation in the Senate. At least 7 Senators have already come out in opposition to the Food Uniformity bill. Our Senators need to know that we oppose any attempts to strip state’s abilities to protect and inform their own citizens concerning food safety and labeling issues.

  • Of course this bill is terrible and all, but if a 100,000 Americans start battling this issue, then it will be another success in the grand strategy to Divide and Conquer.

    Impeach Them All Now.

    • That is not the way to look at it, it isnt a matter of divide, its a matter of safety in an expanding attempt to get cheap harmful and unnutritious food to the people of america while making as much money as possible. If 100,000 people do voice their opinions there is no way that this will get through the senate. Please dont rely on something so ridiculous as impeach them all now, because that isnt going to happen. To get something done you have to get over the frustration of dealing with politics and evaluate what we can actually do as "the public!" And that is voice our opinions through our representatives, all you have to do is send an email....and sure that’s impersonal and all but it is what we can do, and if they do pass a bill that is even more widely opposed than this one already is I think we will hear about it. So just help rather than criticize

  • Make the SOB’s eat the foods that they are going to make the rest of the population eat. Make them eat nothing else, until they puke at the thought of it, or die of it. Maybe then they will begin to remember that they are there to represent the PEOPLE of America, and not the rich who will be able buy anything else.

  • Once again the lobby with the most money wins...The passage of this bill by the House is a great example of why this country needs lobby reform. Hopefully this will be another nail in the Republican led congress.
