REASONABLE EXPLANATIONS

By Peter Fredson

Yesterday, in Fort Pierce, Florida, a 16-year-old boy said he shot his parents. His explanation was simple: “because he always felt like a disappointment to them because he didn’t have a job, smoked marijuana and didn’t share the same "qualities or interests" as his father.”

"So there’s nobody, now there’s nobody to be disappointed in me, try to make me lead ... their life," the lad said.

General Petraeus recently said to American officers during a counterinsurgency course at Taji, north of Baghdad, "We need forthright reports. We’re not trying to sugarcoat things, or put lipstick on a pig, or anything like that."

After listening to General Petraeus . Rep. Ike Skelton of Missouri, said that the “surge” had not worked, and asked: “… will there be political progress in the near term? Are we merely beating a dead horse?"

"Pushing for a precipitous withdrawal now, just as security gains are being realized and as the first critical steps toward political reconciliation are being taken, would thrust the Middle East into chaos and place our national security at substantial risk for generations to come," said Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio.

“A premature drawdown of our forces would likely have devastating consequences,” Petraeus said.

It is comforting to know that reasonable people can arrive at reasonable or satisfactory conclusions.

So let us wait for our Leader to give his speech today, at which time he will undoubtedly use rigid logic to arrive at similarly reasonable solutions.
