What is the definition of pornography? A) pictures or movies of naked people doing unspeakable things to each other.  B) ART and LITERATURE depicting the lives of prostitutes.  C) a disgusting Internet pastime of grown men who really ought to know better. 

If you answered A or C you are quite mistaken. You might not like that but please read on to find out what the REAL pornography is. 

The word pornography is derived from the Greek porni (“prostitute”) and graphein (“to write”) and is, therefore, literally and originally defined as any work of ART or LITERATURE depicting the life of prostitutes.(1)

So let’s go a little deeper, shall we? What is a prostitute?

The term "prostitute" derives from the Latin word prostituta. Its literal meaning is a combination of "up front" and the latin word situere i.e. "to offer for sale."(2)

To "Prostitute," as a verb, means "to put to an unworthy use."

"Erotica," ironically, is defined as the "treating of sexual love in a sensuous or voluptuous manner," and, "is broadly accepted" (as opposed to pornography). 

In his book, "Original Blessing," the ex-Dominican scholar, Matthew Fox, stated that we must have more eroticism in our lives. It goes without saying that the Priest was not really referring to material of an explicit sexual nature but, rather, to the fact that without some kind of eroticism (I think Fox mentioned juggling and the arts) enriching our lives we are not acting out of God’s blessings but out of patriarchal domination and subjugation instead. 

Internet "pornography" has the characteristics of "erotica" and not, as we shall see, the components of pornography at all. The primary reason to make this claim is that tens of millions of website "hits" pretty much cinches the "broadly accepted" component that we attribute to erotica. It is at great risk, of getting tangled up in our problem solving, that we mislabel erotica (on the internet) as pornography. This has staggering ramifications but that issue will have to wait for another time. 

So what, then, IS pornography? 

Let’s go back to prostitution. Prostitution is putting oneself on sale for unworthy use. I can’t think of a better manifestation of this concept than modern-day politicians and corporate executives. So we have, as a modern definition for pornography:

"The body of work of our corrupt politicians and corporate executives ("prostitutes")."

A priest once told me that, "pornography is the desire to possess and control something or someone."

Our political and corporate "leaders" want only to possess and control. They want to control women’s bodies. They want to possess all the Earth’s resources. They want the control and enslavement of all other creatures on the planet. Many want to treat children as their possessions, as though they were blowup dolls, for their sick and twisted violent fantasies. Monsanto wants to control all genetic material for plants and animals for gawd sakes. 

And so:  Pornography is the work of prostitutes (politicians and corporate executives "for sale") and the desire of the same to control, possess, abuse and otherwise enslave others.
