U.S. used banned weapons in Fallujah - Health ministry

An official in Iraq’s health ministry said that the U.S. used banned weapons in Fallujah

Dr. Khalid ash-Shaykhli, an official at Iraq’s health ministry, said that the U.S. military used internationally banned weapons during its deadly offensive in the city of Fallujah.

Dr. ash-Shaykhli was assigned by the ministry to assess the health conditions in Fallujah following the November assault there.

He said that researches, prepared by his medical team, prove that U.S. occupation forces used internationally prohibited substances, including mustard gas, nerve gas, and other burning chemicals in their attacks in the war-torn city.

The health official announced his findings at a news conference in the health ministry building in Baghdad.

The press conference was attended by more than 20 Iraqi and foreign media networks, including the Iraqi ash-Sharqiyah TV network, the Iraqi as-Sabah newspaper, the U.S. Washington Post and the Knight-Ridder service.

Dr. ash-Shaykhli started the conference by reporting the current health conditions of the Fallujah residents. He said that the city is still suffering from the effects of chemical substances and other types of weapons that cause serious diseases over the long term.

Asked whether limited nuclear weapons were also used by U.S. forces in Fallujah, Dr. ash-Shaykhli said; “What I saw during our research in Fallujah leads me to me believe everything that has been said about that battle.

“I absolutely do not exclude their use of nuclear and chemical substances, since all forms of nature were wiped out in that city. I can even say that we found dozens, if not hundreds, of stray dogs, cats, and birds that had perished as a result of those gasses.”

Dr. ash-Shaykhli promised to send the findings of the researches to responsible bodies inside Iraq and abroad.

Fallujah residents said napalm gas was used

During the U.S. offensive, Fallujah residents reported that they saw “melted” bodies in the city, which suggests that U.S. forces used napalm gas, a poisonous cocktail of polystyrene and jet fuel that makes the human body melt.

In November, Labour MPs in the UK demanded Prime Minister Tony Blair to confront the Commons over the use of napalm gas in Fallujah.

Furious critics have also demanded that Blair threatens the U.S. to pullout British forces from Iraq unless the U.S. stops using the world’s deadliest weapon.

The United Nations banned the use of the napalm gas against civilians in 1980 after pictures of a naked wounded girl in Vietnam shocked the world.

The United States, which didn’t endorse the convention, is the only nation in the world still using the deadly weapon.

    • There is no such thing as "Napalm gas". It is not a gas. Mustard gas hasn’t been used in many years and will hurt the people who use it too. The allegation that the US used nuclear weapons is so preposterous that how could you ever believe it? A simple geiger counter could detect it.       In addtition to the above documented interview, Global Security and The UK Mirror also reported the use of Napalm, which was banned in the 1980 UN convention and GUESS who refused to sign the treaty, who refused to stop using Naplam, the hideous weapon that burns the skin and flesh off the human body, the so-called "leader of the free world".....now the new emerging Fascist state groomed for world wide destruction by the NEOCONS.

      The U.S. also upgraded the terrifing mixture of jet fuel and polystyrene with kerosene, instead of fuel. So using a different petroleum distillate STILL makes it NAPALM.

      As far as why the U.S. would use it, besides not giving a damn how they kill, it’s used as a psychological weapon of terror, moron. It’s cheap, destructive and if you read Dahr Jamail residents
      of Fallujah have reported that U.S. military have been seen washing the streets and removing dirt
      from many areas, obviously to remove any evidence.

      As I made perfectly clear, "Napalm is not a gas". Which to most English speaking peoples means that there is another product called "Napalm". (A flammable jelly usually delivered in a bomb) It is NOT a gas. Now do you understand the difference?

      I however refer to the war as the "Liberation of Iraq" although the popular press doesn’t often use that reference as often as it should, There are many many wonderful things happening now in the rebuilding of Iraq. Now that the country of Iraq has accepted democracy and and when it no longer represents a threat to the U.S. and Iraq’s own neighbors, the war will be over.

    • In a statement just prior to the seige of the city the leaders of the resistance in Fallujah denounced Zaqarwi and said that he is merely being used as an excuse by the US to destroy the city. They also stated that the bulk of the resistance fighters in the city were Iraqis, and this was more or less confirmed, albiet begrudgingly, by the US General in command of the operation.
      With all of the media hype following the seige about "torture houses" and "chemical weapons’ labs" if the resistance fighters had been using chemical weapons against US and Iraqi troops it would have made headlines. While what you are saying is plausible in the sense that a resistance group committing an atrocity and then blaming it on the US could be a tactic designed to make the occupation even less popular. It may be plausible, but in the end I think that judging from the means in which the US has utilized all resistance atrocities, real or imagined, to further its own interests it would be a stretch to think that they would miss such an opportunity to capitalize on something as major as this.
      The reports about the use of chemical weapons is coming from a member of the US-appointed Ministery of Health, and with the early position of Allawi that NO civilians had been killed in Fallujah this statement comes as being quite credible.

    • I would invoite the poster to carefully study the initial eye-witness reports, which started circulating some time ago. The reports are very clear that the chemical weapons were delivered by aerial bombing and/or artillery. This is not in keeping with internation law going back even before WWI (IANAL, etc and I have no idea whether the original treaties have been superceded by later conventions).

      The use of chemical weapons in Iraq by the US has been well documented and seems to be well known by those outside the inbedded journalist community. As others said, why wasn’t this widely reported? Also note that the use of these weapons was the subject of Giuliana Sgrena’s research at the time she was abducted. Like it or not, this story isn’t going away.

  • As a Canadian, I feel that the American invasion of Iraq was ordered by a short sighted president with a hidden agenda. It is abundantly clear that the invasion was not carried out to bring democracy to Iraq as the American propaganda machine would like people to belive.

    However, after reading this article - I’d have to say that this is an example of propaganda at the other end of the spectrum. I am not trying to defend anybody here - but this story should be viewed with extreme skepticism and many grains of salt.

    I’m not saying that the use of weaponized mustard gas and napalm isn’t possible - but what caught my attention was the claimed use of "limited nuclear weapons." If such was the case, not only would radioactive evidence be readily verifiable by more than just one doctor conducting research in that city - but American occupying torces themselves would be at extreme risk from their own weapons - evidenced by the terrifying effects of radiation sickness. Surely, it would have to gradually affect others outside of Falluja. Radioactive contaminants tend to spread and affect vast areas - "limited" or not.

    Even if suppression by goverment was attempted, radiation sickness is not hard to identify and information would surely leak - particularly if coalition forces were affected.

    No, the use of "limited nuclear weapons" makes no sense on a tactical level either. There would be no advantage to it’s use. Additionally, the American Gov’t would most likely not risk using it experimentally on Fallujan rebels considering the shaky support that the war is already receiving and what exposure of its use could potentially do.

    The story - on this level at least - lacks credibility, particularly when its only source is from one doctor. Furthermore, the story does not say that photographic evidence of horribly disfigured people clearly suffering from effects of napalm or mustard gas were tabled during the news conference. Clearly, this would have been a first step in establishing the validity of the claims.

    No, for a US administration that fumbles through it’s term - and whose soldiers almost kill a freed italian journalist - I cannot give the American administration the credit that they would have effectively suppressed this so well.

    In any event, I look forward to the release of Dr. ash-Shaykhli’s findings.

    • I wasn’t going to reply to a page I don’t frequent but I thought I would point this out:

      The ’limited nuclear weapons’ are in the form of Depleted Uranium Rounds which the US doesn’t hide it uses. These rounds are far better then normal rounds but have the side effect of vaporizing into a gas like state after impact. In this state the Uranium does disburse over an area. The military likes to say that, because, it is depleted there isn’t a great radioactive charge but the truth of the matter is these things, in the ton and tons used, do create a higher radioactivity level that HAS been recorded since Gulf War 1. Iraq and more so parts of it that saw higher fighting, are flooded with higher rates of radiation. Many symptoms from ’gulf war syndrome’ can easily be seen as low level radioactive poisoning. This is not hidden at all though, and never has been, the reports on what these weapons do are all out there.

  • Why does this article not surprise me after all these years, I can not understand
    why the United Nations and every other responsible body not challenge them on this

  • This story only scratches the surface. Mark 77 firebombs are being used to be specific. They are white phosphorous bombs and technically not napalm.     He explained that in certain areas where the military used “special munitions” 200 square meters of soil was being removed from each blast site.In addition, many of his friends have told him that the military brought in water tanker trucks to power blast the streets, although he hadn’t seen this himself. “They went around to every house and have shot the water tanks,” he continued, “As if they are trying to hide the evidence of chemical weapons in the water, but they only did this in some areas, such as Julan and in the souk (market) there as well.”

    “In the mornings I found Fallujah empty, as if nobody lives in it,” he’d said, “Even poisonous gases have been used in Fallujah-they used everything-tanks, artillery, infantry, poison gas. Fallujah has been bombed to the ground. Nothing is left.”

    • Going by many of the comments here, it would appear many Americans foolishly and stupidly still believe the garbadge they are being fed by their masters, despite massive evidance to the contrary.
      Worse, it would also appear via these same comments, that many Americans actually support these actions themselves .
      They don’t mind, going round the World, kicking people in the head, raping their women and stealing their assets, before destroying their homes and in many case their lives and livelyhoods as well, without exhibiting any concern whatever for their murderous actions.
      The question that plagues me immensly, is how can these Americans fool themselves into believing there will be no price to pay on their part for their actions ?????
      And when the time comes for retribution,(as it surely will) these very same people will cry crocodile tears and demand oceans of blood in revenge.
      For my part, I can see no good whatever, ever eventuating from these actions by America, I see nothing but war and continual bloodshed unless countries band together and ditch the U.S. bonds and force the U.S. to go bust.
      Sure, it’ll hurt us all, but somehow I suspect the pain will be far less then what their administration has in store for us all.

    If I recall correctly, Zarqawi was Al-queda’s chemical weapons expert and we found chemical weapons lab in Fallujah. Wouldn’t it make a little more sense that we hit these labs with conventional weapons and spread some of these toxins into the air?

    The total amount of military personnel who served in Iraq in 1991 was nearly 550,000. Presently, there are over 11,000 dead soldiers from depleted uranium shells, used by our military, to disable Iraqi tanks and other military vehicles. Nearly 250,000 are now seriously ill, and or hospitalized.

      The inaccurate Islam Online story has been posted on hundreds of Web sites.

      On November 12, 2004, the U.S. Department of Defense issued a denial of the chemical weapons charge, stating:

      "The United States categorically denies the use of chemical weapons at anytime in Iraq, which includes the ongoing Fallujah operation. Furthermore, the United States does not under any circumstance support or condone the development, production, acquisition, transfer or use of chemical weapons by any country. Although all napalm in the U.S. arsenal had been destroyed by 2001, Mark-77 firebombs, which have a similar effect to napalm, were used against enemy positions in 2003.

      The repetition of this story on Islam Online’s led to further misinformation. Some readers did not distinguish between what had happened in the spring of 2003, during the march to Baghdad, and in Fallujah in November 2004. They mistakenly thought napalm-like weapons had been used in Fallujah, which is not true. No Mark-77 firebombs have been used in operations in Fallujah.

      On Nov. 11, 2004, the Nov. 10 Islam Online story was reposted by the New York Transfer News Web site, with the inaccurate headline "Resistance Says US Using Napalm, Gas in Fallujah."

      The headline was wrong in two ways. First, as explained above, Islam Online was incorrect in claiming that U.S. forces were using poison gas in Fallujah. Second, the New York Transfer News misread the Islam Online story to mean that U.S. forces were currently using napalm-like weapons in Fallujah.       The false napalm allegation then took on a life of its own. Further postings on the Internet repeated or recreated the error that the New York Transfer News had made, which eventually appeared in print media. For example, on Nov. 28, 2004, the UK’s Sunday Mirror inaccurately claimed U.S. forces were "secretly using outlawed napalm gas" in Fallujah.

      The Sunday Mirror story was wrong in two ways.

      The Sunday Mirror’s phrasing "napalm gas" is also revealing. Napalm is a gel, not a gas. Why did the Sunday Mirror describe it as a gas?
