Bush Tolls Liberty Bell at Philadelphia

By Peter Fredson

December 12, 2005

We all know that the Bush propaganda people are good at presenting our tyrannical, impatient, petulant, irresponsible, egomaniacal President as honest, candid, transparent, hard-working, efficient and highly moral.

We all know this is stage-management, with good background lighting, with sacred or patriotic backdrops, with captive audiences, surrounded by the largest security forces and agents in our history. We all know that Karl Rove, a master trickster, advises Bush in smiling, swaggering, strutting and how to lie sincerely, but that it is Bush’s own idea to smirk, a kind of involuntary tic.

We know that Philadelphia was chosen for Bush’s speech today, to make people think he has something to do with liberty, democracy, freedom. Impression management is vital for this President with the lowest ratings in history because of his arrogance, sociopath rants, viciousness, and willingness to let troops die to acquire oil and bases.

And indeed, this rubbing of elbows with remarkable historical heroes makes some of Bush followers really believe he IS some kind of heroic character. Certainly some fundamentalists sincerely believe he not only talks to his God, but was commanded to invade Iraq and kill Moslems. So that puts him on a nearly equal basis with Jesus, a saintly helper of the Creator.

The 3rd speech today, of about 500 to come, was sheer self-promotion, highly effective misrepresentations and prevarications in an attempt to make people believe he has honor, veracity, truthfulness. Particularly it is intended to make people believe that Bush who by violence stole sovereignty from the Iraqis, intending to make them his colonialist wage slaves, did not stage manage and appoint all their “leaders”, approve a constitution, set elections and get enough time to let corporate raiders seize Iraqi property and other resources forever.

Bush evidently does count Iraqi dead. But he doesn’t admit giving any orders to kill innocents, by Shock and Awe, by destroying their country and possessions, by terrorizing the Iraqis, and by making their country his private Hell for them to try to live in. Someone killed them, but Bush has no idea of who might have done it. He certainly is not going to apologize for murdering infidels. His fundamentalist followers were only too pleased with the new Bush crusade.

Philadelphia is associated with liberty, democracy, and freedom, so the Republican managers of Bush were trying very hard by every state-managed phony scripted photo-opportunity, to get people to believe that he understands those words, believes them, and would uphold the Constitution that gave rise to our country. I’m surprised they didn’t have Bush get up and kiss the bell or ring it for Christmas to show both his patriotism and religious sanctity.

It was therefore with some shock and considerable dismay that I read a report by Doug Thompson, in a blog called "Capitol Hill Blue." that Bush talked to several Republican leaders in the Oval Office, about renewing the offensive USA Patriot Act.

Capitol Hill Blue: Bush on the Constitution: ’It’s just a goddamned piece of paper’

Doug Thompson reports the following:
“GOP leaders told Bush that his hardcore push to renew the more onerous provisions of the act could further alienate conservatives still mad at the President from his botched attempt to nominate White House Counsel Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court. “I don’t give a goddamn,” Bush retorted. “I’m the President and the Commander-in-Chief. Do it my way.”
“Mr. President,” one aide in the meeting said. “There is a valid case that the provisions in this law undermine the Constitution.” “Stop throwing the Constitution in my face,” Bush screamed back. “It’s just a goddamned piece of paper!”
Doug Thompson continues: “I’ve talked to three people present for the meeting that day and they all confirm that the President of the United States called the Constitution “a goddamned piece of paper.”

The hair on the back of my neck stood up when I read those horrible words from a President who twice swore before his God, a Supreme Court Judge and thousands of viewers, on a Bible, that he would uphold the constitution. I don’t know if the incident really happened. I wasn’t there.

I do know it is possible, as Bush as tried on about six occasions to change the Constitution to suit his religious beliefs and to legislate Bible quotations regarding Gays and Marriage, the Flag, etc. I do know that he has regarded mere man-made laws as secondary to religious precepts.

He seems to have contempt for warrants, arrest procedures, spying on his own citizens, indefinite detentions, and definitely is regarded as the source from which emanated dicta on torture and abuse, and that he considers violations of constitutional civil rights as being his prerogative to give or take away.

I know what will happen now. All Republicans present, will swear that they were in some other country. They will resort to vehement denial, to changing the wording of the rant to mere annoyance of our imperial president, to trivializing it, as they have often done in similar instances. The entire cabinet will swear it never happened. Condi will take her expensive shoes to some TV studio, look the camera in the glass eye, and waffle endlessly about any such incident never ever happening.

Bush’s gullible fundamentalists will immediately refuse to believe it. All the corrupt corporate executives will spring to the defense of their money, and will give Bush millions of taxpayer money back. Karl Rove will spend some of the billions of dollars Bush gave him to reconstruct New Orleans and spend it more wisely on bribing essential Republican leaders, editors, and journalists.

If this incident happened then we must impeach the President. But we will not soon be able to prove it. No Senator will betray his President because he is their S.O.B, although they might not hesitate to betray their party or country. Notes of any meeting will be destroyed.

Any security agents present will be sworn to secrecy. No investigation will be attempted. And anyone involved will put their hands on their Bibles, look solemnly at the TV cameras, and swear on their mother’s life that nothing happened. Bush will probably sneak another drink, go back to his ranch to cut brush, and FOX NEWS will report happily that nothing ever happened.

So, after a flurry of cover-up, strange distractions about gays or flag-burning, Bush will declare that he brought democracy, freedom, and liberty to a Constitutional Iraq. After continuing to loot the country for several more years he will have to retire and then perhaps the Iraqis might get their first taste of a Bush-Free country.

  • Unless Jeb Bush makes good his promise to become a candidate for 2008. After Diebold ensures that he gets all the votes, the Bush dinasty will be in full control of the country, and facism will be the rule of the day. Then God (as well as Allah, Brahman, Buddha, etc.) help us all...

    • God will not help you, that’s why your constitution gave you the right to bear arms. You will have to help yourselves I am afraid.

    • I am sorry to say that all of the "sportsmen" I know back Bush and company.

More than likely they will use the guns against the "Leftist"... Their words for all of the people (both American and non-Americans) who oppose the administration.
