"Dictatorships seldom appear full-fledged but emerge piecemeal. When Julius Caesar crossed the Rubicon with one Roman legion he broke the tradition that protected the civilian government from victorious generals and launched the transformation of the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire." - Paul Craig Roberts
In point of historical fact, it was actually the Roman general and dictator, Lucius Cornelius Sulla (138bc-78bc), who set the precedent for the eventual destruction of the republic - that the more famous Julius Caesar later followed and accomplished - by marching through the gates of Rome with his legions not once but twice.
Historical accuracy notwithstanding, Dubya’s relentless attacks on the nation’s democratic institutions, if left unchecked, will surely provide a firm foundation upon which some future American Caesar will finish the job and utterly destroy what will be left of the republic.
There is now talk of a possible run for the presidency by Jeb Bush in the next election. If this horrific possibility should live to fruition, he will surely finish what his older brother and father had labored for so mightily. Lest we forget, in 1997, Jeb Bush was a signatory to the Statement of Principles of The Project for The New American Century.
