To me it appeared that he was unsure of himself and searching for his answers. If, indeed, there was an earpeace, it may be that he was waiting for the answers to be given - and to digest them - before speaking.
And if, indeed, he needs to listen to what he is told over an earpiece in a debate, one seriously needs to question his ability to make decisions in other, far more serious matters.
