Green Fuel’s Dirty Secret
By : Sasha Lilley - Tuesday June 6, 2006

by Sasha Lilley The town of Columbus, Nebraska, bills itself as a "City of Power and Progress." If Archer Daniels Midland gets its way, that power will be partially generated by coal, one of the dirtiest forms of energy. When burned, it emits carcinogenic pollutants and high levels of the greenhouse gases linked to global warming. Ironically this coal will be used to generate ethanol, a plant-based petroleum substitute that has been hyped by both environmentalists and President George (...)

OIL ON TROUBLED WATERS
By : William Fisher - Wednesday May 31, 2006
10 comments
by William Fisher Amid the ever-escalating rhetoric between the United States and Venezuela, the president of the oil-rich Latin American country, Hugo Chavez, has been busily scoring points with low-income American consumers. Under a program sometimes dubbed petro-diplomacy, Citgo, Venezuela’s wholly-owned gas and oil subsidiary, has been providing discounts of up to 60 per cent on heating oil to poor communities in the U.S. The program is currently operating in Maine, (...)

Globalization’s Watchdogs
By : Mark Engler - Wednesday May 31, 2006

by Mark Engler When Bolivian President Evo Morales announced plans to nationalize his country’s oil and natural gas resources in early May, he did more than lay out a promising path for development. He also provided an ideal opportunity to illustrate how large segments of the U.S. and British press have adopted roles as watchdogs for corporate globalization. Since Bolivia’s energy exports go to Brazil and Argentina rather than the United States, and since the nationalization is (...)

Enron’s Schemes "The Very Nature of Profit-Based, Market Capitalism"
By : Wallace Roberts - Sunday May 28, 2006

by Wallace Roberts Despite the conviction of a couple of bad apples at Enron, its top management is not the real culprit in this case. The real culprit is a bad idea: deregulation of the natural gas and electric power industries. Kenneth Lay and Jeffrey Skilling, the former chairman and CEO respectively, can be said to be just "sharp traders," businessmen who did what the free market demands of rational players: take advantage of every loophole they could find to make a profit. Early in (...)

The Great Iraq Oil Grab
By : Joshua Holland - Sunday May 28, 2006
The official reasons the U.S. invaded Iraq don’t hold water. So, as the man said, follow the money ... straight to the oil fields. By Joshua Holland There’s a story, perhaps apocryphal, that Pentagon planners wanted to name the invasion of Iraq, "Operation Iraqi Liberation." Only when someone realized that the acronym — O.I.L. — might raise some uncomfortable questions, was "Operation Iraqi Freedom" born. Supporters of the Iraq war airily dismiss chants of "no (...)

New Estimate of Venezuela’s Total Oil Reserves Makes It the Grandest of Grand Prizes for US - by Stephen Lendman I just finished reading an important new book the author’s publisher sent me, which I’ll shortly be reviewing for publication. The book is investigative journalist (and in his words "forensic economist") Greg Palast’s latest foray into exposing the hidden from view crimes and wrongdoings of the Bush administration. I’m very familiar with (...)

Loremo - the 1.5 litres/100 km biodiesel car Loremo is based on the principle of a captive balloon: Whoever sheds ballast, will pick up speed. The sensational fuel consumption of only 1.5 litres / 100 km is due to the reduction of weight and air resistance and is the result of a productive "struggle" for comfort, design and efficiency. Remembering what is essential does also mean to reduce parts and material as well as to merge functions and, in doing so, also to reduce costs. The cars (...)

I was just reading about Bee County Texas the other day. It seems the good folks there have finally had enough of the high prices they have been paying for gasoline. They are boycotting Exxon until the price for regular unleaded comes back down to $1.30. The idea is to not buy any gasoline at any Exxon or Mobile stations while supporting the stores with inside business so that the employees will still have a job. The effort they desire to put forward is the best of intentions but is quite (...)

HIGHER EDUCATION IN AMERICA: DREAM OR NIGHTMARE? PART IV

PART I PART II PART III If there is one major inconsistency in life, it is that young people who know little more than family, friends and school are suddenly, at the age of eighteen, supposed to decide what they want to do for the rest of their lives. Unfortunately, because of their limited life experiences, the illusions they have about certain occupations do not always comport to the realities. I discovered this the first time I went to college. About a year into my studies, I (...)

PART II PART III PART IV When The Bill of Rights was added to the United States Constitution over two hundred years ago, Americans were blessed with many rights considered to be “fundamental.” One conspicuously missing, however, was the right to an education. If there is one universal question that haunts all human beings at some point in their lives, it is, “Why do we die?” Death, after all, is the great illogic. It ultimately claims all, the rich and the poor, the mighty and the small, the good and the evil. Death also has the capability to make most human pursuits—such as the quest for wealth, fame and power—vacuous and fleeting. Given this reality, I have often wondered why so many people are still willing to (...)

I’ve always been reluctant to answer this question for fear it will discourage conscientious and ethical people from pursuing careers in the legal profession—a (...)
