Huge US natural gas leakage means STOP gas rush, gas boom, gas-fired power plants & global Gasland
By : Dr Gideon Polya - Wednesday January 5, 2011
Because natural gas-fired power plants emit half the CO2 and much lower levels of other pollutants per unit energy produced as coal-fired plants there is a big push for a coal to gas transition. However methane (CH4; the major constituent of natural gas) leaks and is 72 times worse than carbon dioxide (CO2) as a greenhouse gas (GHG) on a 20 year time scale. It can be readily calculated that a 3.7% leakage of CH4 yields that same GHG effect as burning the remaining 96.7% of the CH4 (see (...)

A proposal for 1,000 MW gas-fired power plant to be built 1.5 kilometres from the SE Queensland, Australia Lockyer Valley town of Gatton (population 6,000) has drawn the ire of local residents. The local Lockyer Valley Regional Council (LVRC) has rejected an application from the proponent, Westlink, to build the plant. Westlink is appealing this decision of the council. [1]. The local opposition to the gas-fired power plant has been stated by Chris Hall of Keep Lockyer Rural: “[ (...)

Audacious, No Change
By : June Terpstra, PhD - Saturday December 18, 2010
The claim that common people govern ourselves in a democracy called the United States is a false claim. And the claim that common people can freely and fundamentally criticize our political and economic system and work to build one that is more democratic without reprisal is a lie. Fresia, 1998 Republican representatives and the US president who marketed himself on the need for "change" audaciously said in a statement yesterday that "Today, the Senate passed with strong bipartisan support (...)

The Adventures Of A Progressive In Redland - Chapter 1: Flushed
By : Progressive Democrats of Illinois - Saturday December 18, 2010
I always knew that the Greedy Red Trolls would try to drown us in sorrow and financial misery, I could see it in their beady little glowing red eyes, and don’t ask me about the foul smoke they continually blow out their posterior extruders! I’ve heard it said that Red trolls have no heartbeat - if you put a stethoscope near their chest, it will freeze so badly your hand will turn to ice and fall off. There’s a money-sucking black hole in there, powered by corporatite! (...)

Rebooting Resistance
By : June Terpstra, PhD - Thursday December 16, 2010
Come, then, those of us who care about ending oppression. Reject the inhumanity of the right wing; the ignorance of the Tea-Party; the ineffectiveness of the left wing; the lies of liberals and libertarians; the greed of imperialists and royalists; and the abuses of religions. Now leave them all behind. A possible better world is long overdue. Let us not attempt to recreate or reform systems of empire and globalization. This tired planet cannot survive the games that the greedy play. (...)

Assange Accuser Worked with US-Funded, CIA-Tied Anti-Castro Group

Yesterday Alexander Cockburn reminded us of the news Israel Shamir and Paul Bennett broke at Counterpunch in September. Julian Assange’s chief accuser in Sweden has a significant history of work with anti-Castro groups, at least one of which is US funded and openly supported by a former CIA agent convicted in the mass murder of seventy three Cubans on an airliner he was involved in blowing up. A JAZZMAN CHRONICLE BY JACK RANDOM. DISSEMINATE FREELY. As a novelist with a penchant for political mystery and suspense, I am familiar with the standard plot twist of the endangered protagonist: If only she can get the information out into the public, she’ll be safe. The men in black can’t touch her then and the world will have to grapple with the truth. As the plot thickens in the strange case of Julian Assange, founder of WikiLeaks and the man behind the latest (...)

POSTED RESPONSE TO A COLUMN BY GEORGE GRANT IN THE TELEGRAPH "Why is Julian Assange picking on the United States?" Had I known what is written at the bottom of the piece - that George Grant is Global Security & Terrorism Director at The Henry Jackson Society, a Foreign Policy Think Tank based in London - I would have read George Grant’s words with less sense of perplexity about the man not knowing what he is talking about. For clearly, he does not. But in the United States (...)

WIKILEAKS LEGITIMACY CANNOT BE TESTED BUT THE LEGITIMACY OF THE LEAKS CAN
By : JOHN CHUCKMAN - Sunday December 5, 2010
We have no way to determine whether WikiLeaks itself is genuine. But we do have enough information in the nature of the leaks to reach some tentative conclusions. The leaked material is almost certainly all genuine. But it is highly selective, a crucial fact. There is nothing terrible about America and its wars abroad, and any clear-thinking person knows perfectly well there are terrible tales to tell about wars abroad. That is the history of wars. There is no dirt on Israel or (...)

The far-right in Ukraine are acting as the vanguard of a protest movement that is being reported as pro-democracy. I’VE DECIDED TO "WASTE" MY VOTE

In a 2004 episode of Comedy Central’s animated series South Park, an election was held to determine whether the new mascot for the town’s elementary school would be a “giant douche” or a “turd sandwich.” Confronted with these two equally unpalatable choices, one child, Stan Marsh, refused to vote at all, which resulted in his ostracization and subsequent banishment from the town. Although this satirical vulgarity was intended as a commentary on the two (...)

HIGHER EDUCATION IN AMERICA: DREAM OR NIGHTMARE? PART IV
Friday 28 September
by : David R. Hoffman, Legal Editor of Pravda.Ru
PART I PART II PART III If there is one major inconsistency in life, it is that young people who know little more than family, friends and school are suddenly, at the age of eighteen, supposed to decide what they want to do for the rest of their lives. Unfortunately, because of their limited life experiences, the illusions they have about certain occupations do not always comport to the realities. I discovered this the first time I went to college. About a year into my studies, I (...)

Even as colleges and universities raise their tuition costs, they are relying more and more on adjunct instructors. Adjuncts are (...)

HIGHER EDUCATION IN AMERICA: DREAM OR NIGHTMARE? PART I

PART II PART III PART IV When The Bill of Rights was added to the United States Constitution over two hundred years ago, Americans were blessed with many rights considered to be “fundamental.” One conspicuously missing, however, was the right to an education. America was primarily an agrarian culture, and education, especially higher education, was viewed as a privilege reserved for the children of the rich and (...)

If there is one universal question that haunts all human beings at some point in their lives, it is, “Why do we die?” Death, after all, is the great illogic. It ultimately claims all, the rich and the poor, the mighty and the small, the good and the evil. Death also has the capability to make most human pursuits—such as the quest for wealth, fame and power—vacuous and fleeting. Given this reality, I have often wondered why so many people are still willing to (...)

HOW MUCH CORRUPTION CAN DEMOCRACY ENDURE?

How much corruption can a “democracy” endure before it ceases to be a democracy? If five venal, mendacious, duplicitous, amoral, biased and (dare I say it) satanic Supreme Court “justices”—John Roberts, Samuel Alito, Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas and Anthony Kennedy—have their way, America will soon find out. In several previous articles for Pravda.Ru, I have consistently warned how the Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United decision is one of the (...)

A question I’ve frequently been asked since I began writing for Pravda.Ru in 2003 is, “Why did you become disillusioned with the practice of law?” This question is understandable, particularly since, in most people’s minds, being an attorney is synonymous with wealth and political power. I’ve always been reluctant to answer this question for fear it will discourage conscientious and ethical people from pursuing careers in the legal profession—a (...)
