Fourteen children and three adults have died in a fire that swept through a building in Paris housing African immigrants, French police say. The fire broke out in the capital’s 13th district shortly after midnight. Thirty people were injured. Some 200 firefighters took two hours to control the blaze and help many of the building’s 130 residents to safety. In April, 24 people died in a fire at a Paris hotel also housing immigrants, prompting calls for better housing. (...)

By Amira Hass A European journalist was asked to write about the wall being built around Anata, which will transform it into an enclosed ghetto within Jerusalem. Sorry, she said, the paper’s editors are only interested in the disengagement. It has it all: upbeat news, lots of action, Jews cursing Jews, Jews beating up Jews. We’re fed up with the repetitious details of the wall’s damages. The other side of that coin is the affection with which Ariel Sharon was welcomed in (...)

Charge of “Anti-Semitism” Used to Provoke Immigration of French Jews to Israel
By : Samah Jabr - Thursday July 28, 2005
Charge of “Anti-Semitism” Used to Provoke Immigration of French Jews to Israel By Samah Jabr - October 2004 JUST 10 DAYS after he called on France’s 600,000 Jewish citizens to move to Israel “immediately” to escape what he called “the spread of the wildest anti-Semitism,” Prime Minister Ariel Sharon welcomed the first 200 French Jewish immigrants to arrive in Israel. The official controlled fury with which Paris greeted his call soon was smoothed (...)

By Kerstin Gehmlich PARIS. For the last year, Fatima Louarn and her family have shared a tiny Paris hotel room because they could find nowhere else to live. Now she is pregnant and the owner wants to kick her out. About 8,000 people live in shabby hotels in Paris, often sharing a bathroom with dozens of other people, and living off sandwiches because they are not allowed to cook in their rooms. "It’s not a life. You feel like you’re in prison," says Louarn, a 37-year-old (...)

Like Amish teenagers, Europe’s voters were not offered a truly free choice Amish communities practise the institution of rumspringa. At 17 their children, until then subject to strict family discipline, are set free. They are allowed, solicited even, to go out and experience the ways of the modern world - they drive cars, listen to pop music, watch TV and get involved in drinking, drugs and wild sex. After a couple of years they are expected to decide: will they return to be full (...)

France’s Magnificent Non!

By ALEXANDER COCKBURN Itinerant pundits touching down briefly in Paris lost no time in stigmatizing the French for their resounding Non! in last week’s referendum on the proposed Constitution for Europe. The French were charged with selfishness, self-absorption, nostalgia for a lost empire, unwholesome obsession with Descartes and Jacobinism and other crimes too frightful for individual citation. Actually the French did something both logical and heroic. The logic, supposedly a (...)

The End, French Style

Today’s seismic shift in sentiment on Wall Street was due in no small part to the courageous vote by the citizens of France in turning down the proposition on ratification of the EU Constitution on Sunday. Their nay-saying to the much of the conceptual structure of the European Union struck a major chord for national identity and self-determination over the collectivism of the EU. The ramifications of this vote are likely to be far-reaching and extremely liberating. In essence, the (...)

HIGHER EDUCATION IN AMERICA: DREAM OR NIGHTMARE? PART IV

PART I PART II PART III If there is one major inconsistency in life, it is that young people who know little more than family, friends and school are suddenly, at the age of eighteen, supposed to decide what they want to do for the rest of their lives. Unfortunately, because of their limited life experiences, the illusions they have about certain occupations do not always comport to the realities. I discovered this the first time I went to college. About a year into my studies, I (...)

PART II PART III PART IV When The Bill of Rights was added to the United States Constitution over two hundred years ago, Americans were blessed with many rights considered to be “fundamental.” One conspicuously missing, however, was the right to an education. If there is one universal question that haunts all human beings at some point in their lives, it is, “Why do we die?” Death, after all, is the great illogic. It ultimately claims all, the rich and the poor, the mighty and the small, the good and the evil. Death also has the capability to make most human pursuits—such as the quest for wealth, fame and power—vacuous and fleeting. Given this reality, I have often wondered why so many people are still willing to (...)

I’ve always been reluctant to answer this question for fear it will discourage conscientious and ethical people from pursuing careers in the legal profession—a (...)
