During the Crash of ’29, my great uncle tried to get into the bank to remove the contents of his safe deposit box and discovered that a large chain and padlock held the door to the bank closed. When he finally managed to get in, a few weeks later, he discovered that every lockbox had been rifled and his gold and precious stones were nowhere to be found. He figured he lost more than a million 1929 dollars in that bank!
