> Madrid Fire Re-opens 9/11 Questions: Why did the twin towers fall so fast?

14 February 2005, 23:50

I don’t know that this proves much. The Madrid fire was in a much shorter (32 stories building) with only ten stories above the fire. There were more floors (more weight) above the fires at WTC, plus a much greater fuel source with those thousands of gallons of jet fuel. The steel doesn’t have to completely melt to cause collapse — prolonged exposure to high heat significantly weakens steel. On top of that (if you’ll pardon the pun), the WTC was additionally weakened by the collisions of the airplanes knocking out many support columns. The Madrid fire, as far as I know, was a fire only, no explosion or other mechanical assault on the structure.

Now, why WTC7 went down? That one still puzzles.
