> David Boren Undermines Investigation of University of Oklahoma Bomb

4 October 2005, 02:46

While I have deep respect for Boren (and have had several mentoring sessions by him), I too have been completely shocked by the lack of media coverage on this. Immediately after the incident, it made the LAST 5 MINUTES OF THE 10:00 NEWS. Yes, they went through the weather...through the sports...even talked about a cute little pet rescue story first.

A few years ago some friends of mine made a pipe bomb and blew it up in a rural field (just to see it blow up). They were arrested and the lead story for 3 days. Even assuming that this one was just ’an individual suicide,’ there still was a bomb involved. And there just happened to be 84,000 people right there on a game day. What news organization wouldn’t want to "bring you this story first?!" There is definitely some major PR work going on here.

I live in Las Vegas now (although was in Norman for the weekend), and am often witness to similar media control. This city will NOT let bad things be said about it (where tourism is involved). I have seen someone jump off the roof of the Bellagio to kill themself, and had it not even make the news.

So to the point: Why are you holding any credit to an "official OU media release?" In cases like this, that should just be called "damage control." Examine your source.
