By Caroline Alexander
Jan. 31 (Bloomberg) — U.K. civil servants began a 24-hour strike today, with 200,000 people protesting against job cuts, pay awards and the running of public services, in what may be the biggest walkout by government workers in almost 26 years.
Those on strike today aren't faceless bureaucrats or high-flying mandarins but people at the heart of public services providing the everyday things we take for granted,'' Mark Serwotka, general secretary of the Public and (…)

Strike protests in Paris and London
By Philip Johnston
It was the best of strikes and it was the worst of strikes.
Across Britain and France millions of public sector workers stopped work, in the former to protest about pension reforms and in the latter to block new youth employment contracts.
But whereas in Britain the day was marked by nothing more revolutionary than picket lines and rallies, in France it ended with clashes on the streets. In Paris, where 700,000 marched, police (…)

By Michael Parenti
In December 2005, the reactionaries who are running the government and ruining the country decided to cut about $42 billion from the human services budget over the next few years. Most of the cuts will come out of the hides of the very poorest among us. The victims include persons afflicted with disabling diseases who already have trouble trying to live on a monthly federal pittance.
But there is another side to this Scrooge story. There are others among us who are (…)

By Timothy Heritage
PARIS - Some 210,000 public sector workers marched through French cities on Thursday in widening protests over pay, reforms and job cuts that have sent a sharp warning to President Jacques Chirac's conservative government.
On the third day of protests, some schools closed because of a one-day strike by teachers, and a stoppage by air traffic controllers grounded flights at Bordeaux in western France.
The protests followed a warning strike by rail workers that (…)
