The $3 Trillion Scam: An Economic 9-11?
25 April 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
5 commentsAn Economic 9-11?
An interesting story appeared briefly a few days ago. Two men were arrested with three trillion (with a "t") in fake US Federal Reserve Negotiable Certificates, sometimes called "bearer bonds". What is interesting about the story is how the US Mainstream media pretty much ignored the whole thing. Considering the non-stop coverage given the Michael Jackson molestation trial, the avoidence of a story of a three trillion dollar crime called attention to itself.

4 commentsWorking harder for less while business lines its pockets
THREE YEARS into an economic recovery, workers are losing ground—so much so that the mainstream media are finally having to take notice.
Once inflation is taken into account, compensation for nonsupervisory workers in the private sector—about 80 percent of the workforce—dropped 0.4 percent in 2004. Analyses in the New York Times and Los Angeles Times blamed the usual suspects: globalization and the outsourcing of jobs overseas, a (...) -

1 commentHalliburton, the Houston-based oil services company, may have overcharged the US government by $212m (£113m, €165m) for work in Iraq, according to portions of Pentagon audits released yesterday.
KBR, a subsidiary of Halliburton formerly run by Vice-President Dick Cheney, came under fire last year following allegations that it had overcharged the government $62m in "unreasonable costs" for importing fuel from Kuwait to Iraq.
Yesterday Henry Waxman, the top Democrat on the House (...) -

2 commentsInflation has outpaced the rise in salaries for the first time in 14 years. And workers are paying a bigger share of the cost of their healthcare.
By Nicholas Riccardi Times Staff Writer
For the first time in 14 years, the American workforce has in effect gotten an across-the-board pay cut.
The growth in wages in 2004 and the first two months of this year trailed inflation, compounding the squeeze from higher housing, energy and other costs.
The result is that people like Victor (...) -

Members of Congress cheered and chanted his name as he walked to the platform.
The Ukrainian president - who was elected in December in a re-run of a disputed election - said US support had been "clear and unambiguous".
"The US condemned fraud and upheld Ukrainians’ right to freely elect their government," (...) -
The New Slavery
1 April 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
18 commentsThe average American in the year 2005 lives a fragile existence, in a struggle for survival that can be ended by missing a few paychecks. The carrot at the end of the stick which was formerly known as “the American dream” has been replaced by a whip that can best be described as the American nightmare of homelessness, and slow, early death. You no longer work to achieve a better life for yourselves and your children. You work to keep a roof over your head, and you pray that you don’t lose (...)

7 commentsOverlooking a private white sand beach on the Persian Gulf, some 40 miles south of Kuwait city, is the Khalifa Hilton. It boasts no less than a dozen swimming pools and offers its guests activities such as windsurfing, banana boat rides and deep sea fishing. Every single one of the 84 luxurious air-conditioned villas face either the main pool, which is shaped like a giant guitar, or one of the two adjoining pools that resemble shimmering blue door keys.
In late 2002, a company from (...)
