Congressional Republicans killed a provision in an Iraq war funding bill that would have put the United States on record against the permanent basing of U.S. military facilities in that country, a lawmaker and congressional aides said on Friday.
The $94.5 billion emergency spending bill, which includes $65.8 billion to continue waging wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, is expected to be approved by Congress next week and sent to President George W. Bush for signing into (...) -

The "Down" Syndrome...Where is hope?
9 June 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
9 commentsWe on the Left are constantly accused of negativism and of seeing the glass as half empty. But what else can one do at this point in human development?
The DOW is down, with expectations for further drops due to various institutions switching to Euros as a hedge, rising fears of inflation coupled with false unemployment numbers and outsourcing,a housing sales slump and higher gas prices.
Hopes are down for the future of the Palestine state due to actions being taken by Israel to expand (...) -

I’ve known about and followed Greg Palast’s important work for some time. I read his eye-opening book The Best Democracy Money Can Buy a few years ago and have mentioned it several times in some of my other writing. Greg is one of the most important and exhaustively thorough investigative journalists anywhere, which is especially important at a time when that kind of effort is needed more than ever. I knew he had a (...) -

Rising Wages for Nurses? Nanny State to the Rescue
28 May 2006 par (Open-Publishing)
By Dean Baker
The New York Times had an article today that inadvertently revealed a huge amount about how wages are set in the US economy ("US Plan to Lure Nurses May Hurt Poor Nations," 5-24-06; A1). We all know the official story - wages are supposed to be set by the market, our old friends supply and demand. When certain skills are in short supply, the wages for workers with these skills are bid up. This leads more people to acquire the skills and may also reduce the demand. (...) -
DEMOCRATS AND THE DEFENSE BUDGETS : Just as Ruinous as Republicans

1 commentJust as Ruinous as Republicans Democrats and the Defense Budgets
By WINSLOW T. WHEELER
All the conditions are ripe for a major debate on America’s defense budget. A Republican White House and Congress have produced, at increased cost, a military establishment that is shrinking, aging and less ready to fight. The ruinous effects have shown up again and again, in the form of over-stretched, poorly supported forces in Iraq.
There is, however, no debate. The Democratic Party, while happy (...) -

By Ernest F. Hollings
With the Iraq debacle, the Washington establishment campaigns for the elections in November on: "The economy is good, the economy is good." As in the old movies, let’s have a "preview of coming attractions."
First, Washington hasn’t paid a bill in five years. Inheriting a budget "with surpluses as far as the eye can see," the president and Congress have been spending. In five years they have added $2.5 trillion to the national (...)
