NEW ORLEANS - Across the hurricane ravaged Gulf Coast, thousands upon thousands of blue tarps are being nailed to wind-damaged roofs, a visible sign of government assistance.
Construction crews working with TJC Defense, out of Alabama, install a blue tarp on a home in Kenner, Louisiana. Ian McVea, Fort Worth Star-Telegram The blue sheeting - a godsend to residents whose homes are threatened by rain - is rapidly becoming the largest roofing project in the nation’s history.

Post-Gaza aid not on agenda, but annual aid to Israel weathers storm
Annual U.S. aid to Israel appears unlikely to fall despite the costs associated with Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, but an extra aid package to smooth Israel’s Gaza Strip withdrawal is off the table for now. Yossi Bachar, director general of Israel’s Finance Ministry said Israel pulled its additional request for as much as $2.2 billion in post-Gaza aid because it would (...) -

It’s one thing to lie in politics. It’s another to be caught in a lie. Bill Frist has been caught in a lie. His political future is over. The immediate question is, can he survive as Majority Leader?
The Tennessee Republican claims he wasn’t privy to any inside information leading up to the sale of his stock in Hospital Corporation of America (HCA), the country’s largest for-profit hospital chain founded by Frist’s father, Thomas, and brother, Thomas Jr., weeks before (...) -

It’s a gas shortage! Here we go again. I remember the last one and it was no fun. This one looks to be every bit as bogus and as bad for the ordinary citizens as the last one. The signs were there. Hurricane Katrina sent prices of fuel up. Then Hurricane Rita shut down all the refineries in the southern USA from North Carolina to Texas. There were rumblings that this would have repercussions. Gas prices were going to go up because the refineries had to shut down.

The GOP’s Fiscal Policies Turned a Natural Disaster into a Man-Made Catastrophe

Republicans like to brag that, as a political party, they are more fiscally responsible than their Democratic counterparts. Well, thanks to President Bush’s four years in office that theory can now take up residence in the urban legend department.
If anything, Bush’s tenure as president proves that the Republican tax cuts (which everyone knows truly benefits the wealthiest one percent), drastically slashing funds in the federal budget for much needed improvements to (...) -

Bush and his religious Right administration decided Wednesday to waive all financial sanctions against Saudi Arabia-Washington’s closest Arab ally in the war on terrorism and a major owner of the United States-for failing to do enough to stop the slave trade in prostitutes, child sex workers and forced laborers.
