At the National Press Club, in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 21, 2009, the “Bring the Guard Home! It’s the Law” campaign held a press conference. One of the speakers was Jean Athey of Maryland, Peace Action. She said that her group is proposing legislation to the General Assembly of Maryland that would require “the Maryland National Guard only to be called into federal service for legal purposes and that in the absence of legal authority, the Maryland National Guard should stay within the state.” She added: “The primary purpose of the Guard, we believe, is to defend the state of Maryland and not to be a backdoor draft.”

I don’t recognize my country anymore. In my country, when we go to war, we’re all at war. Everybody knows they have to do their part. Everybody knows it’s our kids, our sons and daughters, out there. That loose lips sink ships. That freedom isn’t free.

Now we’ve got bastards out there telling us, jump through this hoop and that, and the war’s gotta be a perfect war, all the gimbles lined up, with A connected to B connected to C, and if they aren’t, well, heck, we’ll just pout. We’ll boycott. We’ll be war resisters.

Our enemies, Al Qaeda, Iran, what-not, have all the will it takes to kill us but they do not (yet) have the power.

We do have the power to kill them. But we no longer have the will.

This is Obama-Nation, where the government should do everything and its citizens shouldn’t have to do anything.

Who needs an Army? Remote-controlled drone planes will fly over enemy countries and fire laser beams at the enemy’s leaders. War over; total time elapsed, 24 hours.

And, oh my, we’re a nation of laws, so we don’t want to have a CIA, an NSA, or spies, oh no. Spies go to other countries under false pretenses, break their laws, and learn their secrets. No, we can’t be party to that. And I do declare, it is wrong to tap phones, monitor money transfers, or find out what books Ahmed is reading or what websites he is visiting, and no, no, we cannot do that. Don’t discriminate against him and don’t check him for box cutters before he boards the airplane.
