Towards the Truth Regarding War Crimes Committed in Lebanon

by Open-Publishing - Thursday 31 August 2006

Wars and conflicts International Governments France

Lebanon has been victim of what the French government has called a ‘disproportionate’ act of war committed by Israel. This war has violated international law which stipulates that all attacks should be in keeping with proportionality and a limited use of violence against only military objectives. In addition, Israeli military operations contravened the First Additional Protocol of the Geneva Conventions, which stipulates that collective punishments and actions against the civilian population constitute a war crime.

Challenged by the Lebanese resistance, the Israeli army avenged itself by blindly bombing the civilian population, massacring or injuring hundreds of children, women and the elderly; and destroyed non-military infrastructure (milk factories, the central electrical system, school buildings) and undertook operations aiming at terrorizing the population, including in the regions where there were no Hezbollah combatants. Moreover, independent doctors made serious accusations about the utilization of illegal weapons (phosphorous bombs, gas bombs, etc).

NGO’s such as Amnesty International (1), Human Rights Watch (2) and the International Commission of Jurists have spoken about war crimes and crimes against humanity. During a special session of the Commission on Human Rights in Geneva, Mrs. Louise Arbour, High Commissioner for Human Rights of the United Nations, on August 11th, 2006, called for an United Nations inquest regarding Israeli attacks against civilians in Lebanon. The war of destruction against Lebanon cannot be considered as a simple fact in a Middle East policy to realize the objectives of the United States and their Israeli ally.

International law and humanitarian law cannot be bypassed once again. We demand (seek) the truth. Therefore, we call for the creation of an Independent Commission designated by the United Nations to investigate the unjustified crimes committed by Israel against the Lebanese civilian population.
