Protestors demonstrate against the expansion of a U.S. military base in Vicenza, northern Italy, February 17,2007.

Protesters converged on the small northern Italian city of Vicenza on Saturday to speak out against the planned expansion of a U.S. military base there.

Italian government officials had warned of the risk of violence, but the demonstration was peaceful and without incident.

Banners with angry slogans were directed as much against the Italian government as against American foreign policy.

Italy’s fragile coalition government has approved of the Pentagon’s request to double the size of the base, but the issue is caught up in the war in Iraq and Italy’s role in NATO’s presence in Afghanistan.

  • Those Italians know how to protest. Good for them!

  • Bene Multo Bene!

    Good show! Stop the base.

737 bases already (http://www.alternet.org/story/47998/). No more.

If they build it, there will be Depleted Uranium, planes, tanks?

Who is the enemy? Will Russians invade? Green men from Mars?

If the US gets attacked in its foreign bases, Italy will get hit too.
If US does something bad, invites retaliation, who will suffer too?

This base is not needed by the Italian or American people.

    Besides ,why destroy beautiful countryside?
