After watching this brilliant short documentary it becomes clear why certain communities are printing their own currency. Using local currency can “stimulate the local economy by giving people incentive to shop in their own neighborhood, rather than drive the distance to large chain stores.” This helps protect the environment and takes power away from a centralized government and the privately owned Federal Reserve.

“The first community-currency system was born in Canada in 1983. Since then the concept has spread to more than 2,000 communities across North America, South and Central America, Europe, Africa and Asia. The mechanics of these systems change to reflect individual circumstances. But the basic concept of an interest-free, community-controlled exchange medium has remained the same.”

It’s also noteworthy to point out that as of March 23, 2006 the Federal Reserve ceased publication of the M3 monetary aggregate. This could explain why many countries around the world have decided to sell the US Dollar and to convert to other currencies.

Not knowing how much money the Banks are printing means that there is no longer an accurate indication of how much Federal Reserve currency is in circulation. This basically means that we are playing Monopoly with people who can take money out of the bank anytime they want, since they are the bank. This should raise alarm bells across the United States, especially since Bush’s Bankruptcy Bill has created Debt slavery for all Americans.

With the United States on the verge on bankruptcy, is it any wonder then that local communities are printing their own currency and helping to protect the environment in the process?
