The Doha Goals Forum against discriminations

by Pierce Durdan - Open-Publishing - Friday 26 June 2015

The Doha GOALS Forum, being held this year in Los Angeles for the first time in partnership with the Special Olympics, has set up a series of special initiatives to promote development through sport. One of the most powerful is the Global Watch initiative, which is an international effort to tackle discrimination in sport.

Racism, discrimination and hate are key social issues which the Doha GOALS Foundation has pledged to help eradicate. The Global Watch initiative was formed in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation and South African activist Tokyo Sexwale, and focuses on sports across the world. From sports fields to playgrounds, Doha GOALS Foundation is centred on saying no to racism in sport.

Global Watch was first brought into existence at a meeting between political and athletic leaders in Doha in June. Now, the Foundation hopes to draft a charter statement to use sport as a marker of equality and fairness. It is also an example of the powerful social change that the leaders of the world should try and bring about – something which H.E. Sheikh Faisal bin Mubarak Al Thani hopes to bring about at the fourth edition of the Doha GOALS Forum in July.

Doha GOALS is the world’s premier platform for world leaders to create initiatives for global progress through sport. The Global Watch initiative is just one of many that wield the considerable power of CEOs, politicians, athletes and NGOs in helping to achieve social and economic goals through sport.

The Forum is being run by Richard Attias, as executive producer, in tandem with Sheikh Faisal bin Mubarak Al Thani as executive director. Confirmed speakers include Mark Spitz, Olympic champion, and Sebastian Coe, who was in charge of the 2012 London Olympics. The Doha GOALS Forum promises to be a productive discussion forum that brings about change for the better in sport.
