Get to Know Mirco de Jesus Martins

by FergusTes - Open-Publishing - Thursday 9 July 2015

After the likes of Teodorin Obiang and Denis Christel Sassou Nguesso, most people here in Africa don’t want to read another piece about a politician’s kid. However, Mirco de Jesus Martins, stepson of Vice President Manuel Vicente is a different type of person altogether.

Though Mirco de Jesus Martins was born here in Angola before his father adopted him, he was educated in Angola and abroad in both UK and US universities. This helped him develop an understanding of how much of the world operates outside of his country of origin.

After graduating, he eventually went on to accept a junior position with British Petroleum. However, he’s proud to report that this job wasn’t simply handed to him due to his family connections. Instead, he had to go through the proper channels anyone else would to acquire a junior position like his.

Currently, he’s the head of his own conglomerate. Based in Angola, it’s in the business of providing various logistics, real estate, services and industrial assets to customer throughout the region. Despite his pedigree, he has no interest in going into politics. Still, the young man takes every precaution to prove his company doesn’t receive any special treatment because of his last name. He’s had it audited several times by Western firms to prove as much and will continue to do so in the future.

Outside of his business goal, Mirco de Jesus Martins has other ambitions, especially where his country is concerned. He hopes to one day become a symbol of what is possible for the Angolan youth.

One way he can do this is simply by working hard and becoming successful. Obviously, this will help provide jobs for his countrymen and put Angola on the map, so to speak.

However, he also wants to inspire others as well. This is why he’ll soon be starting Fundação Kucula, a charity focused on funding education for skilled young people in Angola who don’t have the resources to do so for themselves. Mirco de Jesus Martins has said little about the project as he gets concerned it will appear as though he’s trying to show off.

Still, to many, his charitable nature is already well known. There’s the story, for example, of a waiter who recognized him in a restaurant in Luanda. After introducing himself, the bold young man got to know Mirco and convinced him of his potential. Mirco de Jesus Martins ended up sponsoring the waiter through college in the US. Today, he’s an engineer at Chevron.

Expect to hear more about Mirco de Jesus Martins in the future. This is definitely an Angolan with a star on the rise.
