The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation defines terrorism as the" unlawful use of force or violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives. "

The fear level has certainly been raised at the University of Oklahoma, as a consequence of the October 1 bomb which was exploded on campus by Joel Hinrichs during a football game with Kansas State. Yesterday, the police bomb squad was called to the campus because someone had seen a suspicious lunch box. Go here to read about it:

Although Hinrichs was the only one who died in theOctober 1 incident, suspicions are high that he intended to carrry out a mass murder. When he detonated he was seated on a bench near a sidewalk. It was a two-minute walk from the stadium, and the explosion was three minutes before half-time. An accidental early detonation appears likely.

Further, the bomb blew out two windows in the microbiology building, destroyed the bench, disintegrated the upper half of Hinrichs’ body, rattled homes at least five blocks from ground zero, and could be heard five miles away.

Additionally, police found other explosives in Hinrichs’ apartment after the incident, and an off-duty officer observed him trying to buy ammonium nitrate in a feed and seed store on September 29.

Bomber Hinrichs had a Pakistani roommate who attended the Mosque, and KWTV news of Oklahoma City reported that Hinrichs also was seen attending the same Mosque, which was a short distance from his apartment. Mosque leaders have disputed this. There were rumors that Jihad literature was found in Hinrichs’ apartment, but the court sealed the evidence, so the public remains uninformed about this.

In spite of the facts, OU president David Boren, widely known as the patron and mentor of George Tenet, has conducted a damage control campaign attempting to represent the Hinrichs death as just an "individual suicide" by an "emotionally troubled" youth who did not intend to harm others. The FBI has given Boren some support in this charade, by emphasizing their claim that there was no Jihad literature found in the search. In doing so, along with Boren and his numerous parrots, they have implicitly betrayed their adherence to the prejudiced notion that only Islamic Jihadists can be terrorists. That is a strange viewpoint in Oklahoma, where memories of Tim McVeigh and Terry Nichols are still fresh.

The FBI has not consistently backed Boren all the way and has left open consideration of the possibility that Hinrichs had terrorist intentions. An October 16 Associated Press story reported: "investigators have said they may never know whether the student wanted to get inside the stadium."

Allthough Boren has claimed that no one at the stadium was ever in danger during the October 1 game, his actions consequent to the Hinrichs explosion betray his own doubts about the pabulum he has been feeding the public. He has mailed season ticket holders a letter that tells them to get to the game early, because searches will be going on at all stadium gates. He has also seen to the preparation of an evacuation plan which will be distributed to all stadium entrants.

Boren’s desire to convince the public that the Hinrichs death was just an "individual suicide" is explained by his obvious need to keep the revenues flowing into the football program from ticket sales and donations. In 2002, in service of his gargantuan stadium expansion project, he encumbered the university with a $5 million annual debt service obligation, for 30 years, to pay for it. Consequently he has been raising tuition and raiding the OU general fund to help out his pals in the athletic department..
