FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS
By : David R. Hoffman - Wednesday May 24, 2006

by David R. Hoffman, Legal Editor of PRAVDA.Ru The Bells did not toll in remembrance on April 9, 2006. The flags did not fly at half-mast. The rubbish that passes for “news” in the world of corporate-controlled media did not mention his name. Even the glut of television programs and networks devoted to the sycophantic worship of “celebrities” failed to acknowledge him. He was, after all, a man of substance, and substance finds no home in a culture obsessed with (...)

LET’S IMPEACH THE PRESIDENT / by Neil Young (Streaming Audio) With Neil Young and Pearl Jam releasing devastating anti-Bush albums in the coming weeks, it looks like rock has rejuvenated its protest past. By Jan Frel Only one friend of mine popped the champagne after the Supreme Court’s 5-4 vote in Bush v. Gore effectively sealed the deal that we’d see a right winger in office. The friend, a fan of ’70s and ’80s punk music, was overjoyed because he told me (...)

Righteous Indignation Album of the Year-Neil Young Clobbers the Thought Police
By : John Stauber - Sunday April 30, 2006
I’m listening to Neil Young’s new album, Living With War. It’s not my first time; I was lucky enough to be at a private listening last week in California. But now, along with millions of others connected to the Internet, I’m hearing it live today through my computer speakers, streaming for 24 hours, courtesy of Mr. Young and his absolutely brilliant bunch of guerrilla marketers and movement builders. Peace groups like True Majority smartly have seized on the moment (...)

From AxisofLogic.com (published here in English, Spanish and German) By Phil Ochs; translations by Germán Leyens, Nancy Almendras and Nadine Discenza ; introduction by Axis of Logic Eds. Jan 7, 2006, 10:31 It is 40 years since this song was written and performed by Phil Ochs. At the time, it was simply one more reason for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to mercilessly harass Ochs for his ‘anti-Americanism’. But the man would not bend. Click Here to Listen to "Not Ready to Make Nice" Three years is a long time in geopolitics. In 2003 the Dixie Chicks were condemned as traitors in America after telling a London audience they were ashamed that their president came from Texas. Now the group’s angry new song addressing that controversy looks set to become a hit. Not Ready to Make Nice, due to be released in May, refers to death threats the three Texans received after the Guardian reported how they had criticised (...)

Lessons Taught by Grammy
By : Eugene Robinson - Saturday February 11, 2006
By Eugene Robinson Was his insolent claim that "George Bush doesn’t care about black people" the reason Kanye West didn’t win the prestigious album of the year and record of the year awards he deserved at the Grammys the other night? That’s just part of the story, I think, and we’ll get back to it after we first survey the Big Picture. Anti War Album - "Hypnotize" by System Of A Down : A review
By : chycho - Wednesday February 1, 2006
The quick review of System Of A Down’s "Hypnotize" is that this album is a masterpiece. This group of very talented and extremely intelligent individuals have just put themselves into the history books. The message shared is to educate ourselves, to learn that we are free, and to resist corporate laws disguised as protection from invisible enemies. This is done eloquently in operatic form by two vocal talents, each with dual personalities, and delivered with force while riding on a (...)

The far-right in Ukraine are acting as the vanguard of a protest movement that is being reported as pro-democracy. I’VE DECIDED TO "WASTE" MY VOTE

In a 2004 episode of Comedy Central’s animated series South Park, an election was held to determine whether the new mascot for the town’s elementary school would be a “giant douche” or a “turd sandwich.” Confronted with these two equally unpalatable choices, one child, Stan Marsh, refused to vote at all, which resulted in his ostracization and subsequent banishment from the town. Although this satirical vulgarity was intended as a commentary on the two (...)

HIGHER EDUCATION IN AMERICA: DREAM OR NIGHTMARE? PART IV
Friday 28 September
by : David R. Hoffman, Legal Editor of Pravda.Ru
PART I PART II PART III If there is one major inconsistency in life, it is that young people who know little more than family, friends and school are suddenly, at the age of eighteen, supposed to decide what they want to do for the rest of their lives. Unfortunately, because of their limited life experiences, the illusions they have about certain occupations do not always comport to the realities. I discovered this the first time I went to college. About a year into my studies, I (...)

PART I PART III PART IV Several years ago, a young lady came into the college where I was teaching to inquire about a full-time instructor’s position in the sociology department. Even as colleges and universities raise their tuition costs, they are relying more and more on adjunct instructors. Adjuncts are (...)

HIGHER EDUCATION IN AMERICA: DREAM OR NIGHTMARE? PART I

PART II PART III PART IV When The Bill of Rights was added to the United States Constitution over two hundred years ago, Americans were blessed with many rights considered to be “fundamental.” One conspicuously missing, however, was the right to an education. America was primarily an agrarian culture, and education, especially higher education, was viewed as a privilege reserved for the children of the rich and (...)

If there is one universal question that haunts all human beings at some point in their lives, it is, “Why do we die?” Death, after all, is the great illogic. It ultimately claims all, the rich and the poor, the mighty and the small, the good and the evil. Death also has the capability to make most human pursuits—such as the quest for wealth, fame and power—vacuous and fleeting. Given this reality, I have often wondered why so many people are still willing to (...)

HOW MUCH CORRUPTION CAN DEMOCRACY ENDURE?

How much corruption can a “democracy” endure before it ceases to be a democracy? If five venal, mendacious, duplicitous, amoral, biased and (dare I say it) satanic Supreme Court “justices”—John Roberts, Samuel Alito, Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas and Anthony Kennedy—have their way, America will soon find out. In several previous articles for Pravda.Ru, I have consistently warned how the Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United decision is one of the (...)

Imagine, if you will, that the United States government passes a law banning advertisers from sponsoring commercials on Rush Limbaugh’s radio show or Rupert Murdoch’s Fox (Faux) “News” Network. A question I’ve frequently been asked since I began writing for Pravda.Ru in 2003 is, “Why did you become disillusioned with the practice of law?” This question is understandable, particularly since, in most people’s minds, being an attorney is synonymous with wealth and political power. I’ve always been reluctant to answer this question for fear it will discourage conscientious and ethical people from pursuing careers in the legal profession—a (...)
