A better way to put the dog/tail relationship would be to use a comparison of the gravitational relationship between the earth and the moon. The earth attracts the moon in the same proportion as the moon attracts the earth, thus establishing an equilibrium between the two bodies. But, keep in mind that the moon still has the subordinate position and revolves around the earth and not otherwise. Israel has been useful to the United States’ strategic foreign policy IN THE MIDDLE EAST, and only in the Middle East. This usefulness, however, will grow weaker as the U.S. continues to establish a more DIRECT PRESENCE in that region. Avnery is a good man, but he falls for the false conceit that Israel is somehow on the same footing as the United States. The United States to Israel is like the master to the man.
