Years ago, some friends who had escaped from behind the Iron Curtain and I had a discussion about the art of lying. I was amazed at how easily they lied. They were amused by my bumbling whenever I tried to lie. They explained, when you live in a free country, you don’t need to lie. But, when you live in a country that’s not free, you have to lie to survive. Government support has to be seen as absolute and unconditional ... your feelings can’t betray you.
