Why is any of this suprising?
The United States is not a democracy, much less a social democracy.
It’s a centralized oligarchy of propertied interests with a few republican institutions for the bourgeoisie.
It always has been.
The Bailout of Wall Street - passed in spite of the opposition of over two thirds of the American people - should have brought that home.
The rest of the world could ask the question: why didn’t we take to the streets. The government was completely de-legitimized.
Revolutions have taken place over less.
The answer is that we’ve internalized and accepted the fact that we are not in control.
We are not a democracy.
