Profit over social use

25 November 2008, 16:52, by Arneson Stidgeley

Article says "Profit over social use: Relatedly, the corporate-driven economy was being driven by what could make a profit, rather than what would serve a social purpose."

How do we define ’social purpose’? If we mean ’something that society benefits from’ then the best way to see if people benefit from something is if they are willing to pay for it. And paying for things brings profit (because if things aren’t profitable they tend to stop being supplied).

So, it’s difficult to separate profit making from that which serves a social purpose.
