That Whiteys need to acknowledge every word of your essay is, to me, a given.
But HOW to make the necessary changes, that is the hardest part. Do we work
individual by individual, or through institutional change? I feel that the only true way is through individual change, but that is achingly slow. Even with a modicum of institutional change, you point out the despair fifty years later. The home is where we need to begin, but that is so private. How do we get to the minds and hearts of the masses? How do we get past the control of our mass media by those vested in the present structure? Your powerful essay is one voice. It is read by those sympathetic to that tone of voice. Your readers can add their voices to yours, and so on. Fifty years from now will there be a sea change? Sometimes surprising things happen.... But the wait is not acceptable when lives are in the balance.
