> Death and the maiden in Iran

9 September 2004, 19:46

Hanging a 16-year old girl for fornication is cruel. That her male companion was not also hanged shows a brutal suppression of women by the culture. Obviously, the culture needs to be changed.

There are other grotesque examples from the Middle East, such as a father killing his own daughter for defiling the family name by having been raped.

But drawing global geopolitical implications from such events, such as in many earlier comments about Zionism and war starting in Iran and Syria, is far-fetched.

Let us all instead focus on resolving such cultural monstrosities by peaceful means. Going to war is only justified by major aggression.
