To be honest...in my opinion, there wasn’t an earpiece. Instead, there was someone planted in the audience that was giving him hand signals. (it’s not so stupid if you remember that W was part owner of a baseball team) That would explain his distant looks, constant blinking (in order to see the handler past the lights) and pauses.
