I sometimes wonder if the South ever wanted to really be a part of the United States, or any other country, long before the Civil War. Before the war the South was a bunch of separate cotton republics.
When the South broke away and formed the Confederacy it did not take very long for some of the Confederate states to threaten to break away from the Confederacy. The South never did get along very well with the North and eventually the South proved it could not even get along with itself.
