> Kerry clutches to hopes of recount victory

27 November 2004, 08:25

As anyone with a computer science degree, like myself, knows, in fact is taught in the first course towards a degree, it’s so very easy to manipulate data with a computer program.

If President Bush fairly won, my congratulations to him. But as a citizen of the United States, I have doubts at this time. Doubts that make me believe we no longer have a democracy in America.

The only way to extinguish my doubts, and others that share my doubts, is to crack open the source code of all touch screen and optical scanner machines that were used in the 2004 presidential election.

This request is not so outrageous. The companies that made money participating in the election with their machines should not be surprised if their machines have been called into question and that a certification of their code is needed.

I know that a company does not want to reveal its valuable source code, but it’s a risk of doing business, and besides, I’m sure Diebold and the other election corporations have already profited plenty.

Let’s be realistic here. If the source code is anyway tainted to skew an election, then why bother voting at all. And maybe next time it will be your candiate who’s election is rigged.

But my computer programming paranoia can be easy resolved. Let’s look at the code.
