Thank you for your provocative story. I believe there should be an investigation of the circumstances, and I too jumped over the notion of two shots to the head and the note to the movers.
I knew Gary very well and worked with him at The Plain Dealer. He was, in fact, the last person I would have considered a candidate for suicide. In fact, Gary thrived in adversity. He was the most bull-headed person I ever knew.
After Gary quit his job due to his assignment to a suburb, how did he react? He was not despondent or suicidal. He wrote a book and then went out and defended the book and his reporting at the Mercury News.
The reason I find this suicide suspicious is Gary was too proud to die under those circumstances. He would have clawed his way back to the top because he had so much pride and he was not without ego.
Perhaps he did kill himself, and the PRELIMINARY evidence seems to point that way, but I would like to have a lot more information.
