> The London-Washington Axis Called Into Question

7 January 2006, 04:33

Fidel, what is the point of this far too windy diatribe? What if Great Britain wants to be an ally of both Europe and America? That is possible, you know. There are no sides to choose here.

We live in a unilateral world Fidelista. This idea that the entire int’l community is moving in lock step and America is out there on it’s own is complete rubbish. The foreign policy of China and Russia is far more unilateral than Americas. You think China’s going to go to the UN and ask for a vote if they decide to invade Taiwan? Most recently China threatened to abolish the sister city status of Liverpool with Shanghai. What was Britain’s crime? They allowed the Dalai Lama to come visit their country. But Britain got off easy, simply because of their importance in the world. Smaller countries get much rougher treatment from China for the same infraction in the form of official economic sanctions and denial of access to China’s markets. Hmmm... using economic sticks to threaten countries into submitting to your way of thinking — one would almost call that a bully, wouldn’t they?

Then there’s Russia that has racked up a body count in Checheya that’s impossible to count at this point. What was the date that Russia went to the UN to ask for help in dealing with Chechneya, Fidelista? I forget.

Oh, and most recently it was EUROPE that balked at a multilateral trade agreement at the WTO, wasn’t it? This coming from the pontificating Kyoto Treaty signers themselves.

Sorry, Fidel, your artithmetic doesn’t add up. Britain is and will continue to be a staunch US ally, and the US will continue to be a staunch ally of Europe. We’ve got tens of thousands of our dead soldiers over there to prove our loyalty to the Continent. Europe (including Britain) and America need each other, and we’re going to need each other even more in the coming years. So, let’s all stand around the campfire and sing Kumbaya. Enough with this side-choosing nonsense.
