COCA COLA ACEPTA UNA INVESTIGACION EN COLOMBIA, REBOC: “IMPORTANTE PASSO ADELANTE, PERO EL BOICOT SIGUE”
ROMA, 8 de Noviembre 2005 – En la noche de ayer, “The Coca Cola Company”, ha declarado publicamente aceptar una inspección en sus plantas en Colombia de parte de una Comisión, que partirá adentro del Marzo 2006 y que esta será compuesta por instituciones, organizaciones de la llamada sociedad civil italiana e internacional y con la participación del sindicato colombiano SINALTRAINAL. Este último en el 2002 lanzó la Campaña Internacional de Boicot, luego haber sufrido desde el 1989 hasta hoy, 8 homicidios, secuestros, amenazas de muertes, desplazamientos forzados y montajes judiciales.
“Se trata de un grande logro de la sociedad civil – declara REBOC – que, con el apoyo de instituciones sensibles a los temas éticos y a los derechos, impuso a Coca Cola aceptar la investigacion independiente, luego haberla rechazada por dos años no obstante el reclamo de instituciones, universidades y sindicatos en todo el mundo.
Ahora, sea el Presidente Castellani, de TOROC (el Comité Organizador de las Olimpiadas en Torino, Italia), y sea la Presidenta Bresso de la Region Piemonte (que hospeda las Olimpiadas), que habian tildado la actividad contra la Antorcha Olímpica como una tonteria y una forzadura, tendrán que revisar sus posturas y comprender de haber quedados muy atrazados”.
“Este importante resultado – remata REBOC – confirma una vez mas que las grandes multinacionales, aparentemente intocables, son gigantes con pies de barro y que la sociedad civil, con la unión entre consumidores críticos y trabajadores, puede tener un papel importante para obtener una conducta responsable por las empresas.
Para una evaluación mas completa, esperamos averiguar la composición de la delegación que tendrá necesariamente que preveer la presencia de SINALTRAINAL.
Una confirmación de la seriedad del empeño asumido por Coca Cola, sería el cese de la represalia judicial actualmente en curso en Colombia contra los valientes sindicalistas que generaron las denuncias contra la empresa y que ya han sidos absueltos en primer grado de la acusación de calumnia”.
“Después haber remarcado la importancia de esa conquista – concluye REBOC – hay que agregar que se trata solo de un paso adelante en un camino todavía muy largo. La Campaña de boicot sigue, hasta alcanzar los objetivos: Verdad, con la comprobación de las responsabilidades de los mandantes y los ejecutores de la campaña represiva contra el sindicato; Justicia, con la condena de los responsables; Reparacion Integral de los daños sufridos por las víctimas, junto a una reexaminación global del sistema productivo de Coca Cola en Colombia, que hoy en día se basa en la precarización del 94 % de los trabajadores y sobre unos sueldos por debajo al mínimo legal”.

Rome, 8th Nov 2005 – Yesterday in the evening The Coca-Cola Company has publicly declared to accept an inspection in its plants in Colombia. The inspection will take place within March 2006 and will be carried on by a Commission composed by institutions, Italian and international civil society organizations and the Colombian trade union SINALTRAINAL, which launched in 2002 the international campaign for the boycott, after have been suffering since 1989 eight murders, kidnappings, threats, forced displacements, made-up judicial stories.
“It’s a great success reached by the civil society – REBOC states – that, with the support of institutions sensitive to the rights and ethic themes, has obliged Coca-Cola to accept an independent inquiry, after refusing it for two years despite the requests made by institutions, universities, and trade unions from all over the world.
Now both the President of TOROC, Castellani, and the President of Region Piemonte, Bresso, that branded the initiative against the Olympic Torch as a stupid trick, will have to change their minds and to understand that they remained behind”.
“This important result – REBOC continues – confirms once again that the big multinationals, apparently untouchables, are giants with feet of clay, and that the civil society through the union between critic consumers and workers, can have an important role in order to obtain a responsible behaviour by the companies.
For a complete evaluation we are waiting to verify the composition of the delegation that will have necessarily to include the presence of SINALTRAINAL.
A confirmation of the seriousness of the engagement assumed by Coca-Cola would be the end of the judicial retaliation carried on in Colombia against the brave trade unionist that started the denunciation and that have been already discharged in the first degree from the indictment of slander”.
“After underlying the importance of this conquest – REBOC concludes – we need to add that it’s just a step forward in a long way. The campaign for the boycott will continue until the achievement of the objectives: Truth, with the verification of the responsibilities of instigators and executors of the repressive campaign against the trade union, Justice, with the conviction of the responsible, Integral Reparation of the damages suffered by the victims, together with a revision of the whole Coca-Cola productive system in Colombia that at present is based on the precariousness of 94% of the workers and on wages below the minimum established by law”.
