A total of eight US House members have co-sponsored Resolution 635 to create a select committee to investigate the grounds for impeaching President Bush, Atlanta Progressive News has learned.

The co-sponsors are Rep. Lois Capps (D-CA), Rep. John Conyers (D-MI), Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-TX), Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), Rep. Donald Payne (D-NJ), Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY), Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA), and Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-CA), according to the US Congressional website Thomas.loc.gov

HR 635 reads as its official title: "Creating a select committee to investigate the Administration’s intent to go to war before congressional authorization, manipulation of pre-war intelligence, encouraging and countenancing torture, retaliating against critics, and to make recommendations regarding grounds for possible impeachment."

The bill was initially proposed by Rep. Conyers on 12/18/2005. The 7 other co-sponsors added their names on 12/22/05.

"In brief, we have found that there is substantial evidence the President, the Vice-President and other high ranking members of the Bush Administration misled Congress and the American people regarding the decision to go to war in Iraq; misstated and manipulated intelligence information regarding the justification for such war; countenanced torture and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment in Iraq; and permitted inappropriate retaliation against critics of their Administration. There is at least a prima facie case that these actions that federal laws have been violated - from false statements to Congress to retaliating against Administration critics," Rep. Conyers said in a press release on 12/20/05.

As reported last week in Atlanta Progressive News, US Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) stated in a radio program that he would sign a bill of impeachment of President Bush if it were drafted on account of Bush’s approval of illegal domestic wiretapping. US Senator Barbara Boxer has also requested a report by legal scholars regarding the grounds for the Bush’s impeachment for the same reason. The article regarding the statements by Rep. Lewis and Sen. Boxer is available here: http://www.atlantaprogressivenews.c...

Meanwhile, a current pageview of an MSNBC.com poll as of 01/01/06, shows 86% of 185,673 total respondents believe President Bush should be impeached. The poll is available here and has been active online for several days: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10562904

  • keep dreamin they are not going to impeach that pile of shit. We will have better odds for a sniper to take that sad sack of shit out.

    • As much as I hate to say I agree with you, I agree with you. But on the other hand, what good would it do? There is a whole flock of shits lined up behind W who would take over were he to be impeached.

    • At least we would give the rule of law a chance

    • I think that maybe those morons who would succeed Bush should he be impeached would not be able to get away with as much because they don’t have the same "charm factor" which obviously appeals to Bush’s followers.

I’ve seen people who hate Cheney or Rumsfeld or Rice or any of the other Neocons but are absolutely unwilling to give up their spooky cult-like worship of W. I mean, really...who would think having a couple of beers with Cheney would be a fun-filled evening, except for perhaps his wife and his rubber tub ducky?

So I may be wrong, but I think Georgie might only be a figurehead...a front man....the Stan Laurel to the Neocon Oliver Hardy....or all three of the Stooges at the same time.

But if he were to be forced from the White House, we might at least have the entertainment factor of seeing loads of dedicated Bushies drowning themselves in vats of Wild Turkey in his honor.

  • I’m aghast at the disconnect between our elected representatives and their constituents. If 86% of Americans believe impeachment is in order, how is it that barely 2% of our representatives are acting on this? I will be interested to see if this gets legs just how many Republican lawmakers believe in the rule of law. I’m guessing very few.

    • 86% of MSNBC respondents believe that impeachment is in order. That is not the same thing as 86% of Americans.

The poll is not representative of the entire population. It was not randomly collected, without biases. In other words, MSNBC generally has a different audience than FOX News . People who answered the poll probably are better informed than the general population, are angry and wish to have an avenue to express it, and believe it is worth their effort to respond.

Randomly collected results might be significantly different. Many in this country blindly follow the ’Christian’ regime that is merely ’trying to protect us’ (FOX News dittoheads). Many are intentionally oblivious/ignorant regarding the ’news’. Many have lost faith that their opinion makes any difference.
