  You speak of getting people like Jim Hightower, Ed Schultz, Alex Jones, Mark Crispin Miller, Howard Zinn, Gore Vidal on board to support your plan. Most of them supported Dennis Kucinich’s Presidential campaign in 2004. What good did it do? The American people yawned and changed channels. And of course in the end Kucinich rolled over and spread his cheeks for War Monger Kerry.

  And then there is the fact that the Democrats are pushing hard to make it all but impossible for third parties to run for office. No campaign funds for a third party candidate who can’t get signatures from at least 20% of the voters in the last election. This is part of HR 4694 sponsored by David Obey and cosponsored by, among others, Barney Frank, James McGovern and Henry Waxman—all supposed “liberal” Democrats.

    Third parties have, in recent years, been created to divide and conquer as the Web site owner indicated. I can prove that. If you log onto my site, which is http://www.truedemocracy.net and click on the icon that says Election Endorsements, you will read what sent me by a man, Chuck Schlund, who knows whereof he speaks. It opened my eyes and shocked me too, especially since I, as the publisher of four century’s worth of top secret history of our nation, endorsed, voted for, and campained for Ralph Nader, a candidate who I thought was honest.

    Nader is a CIA operative, so he’s no friend of mine.

  Who cares about Cheney’s shooting episode when our privacy and rights are in dire jeopardy? Feingold is rightfully outraged. The nearly signed and sealed Patriot Act states our government can obtain sensitive business records of innocent, law-abiding Americans without even having suspicions of a link to suspected terrorists or spies or their activities.

  You have to read what Feingold says —the lack of limitations, secrecy and gag orders are quite frightening.

  To further convince you we have a near dictatorship, Feingold says: "it appears the Majority Leader is planning to prevent Senators from offering and getting votes on amendments to the bill." Unbelievable! This administration won the 2000 election by intimidation and force. Soon all their methods will be legitimized.

  If the Constitution is just a piece of paper, I suspect the two term limit for the executive branch will become obsolete in 2008.

  Actually I thought of this idea and posted it on the internet some time ago.

  It is right and it would work. The problem will be getting enough people out of their chairs to fill 485 seats.

  Democracy was not murdered in the US it was allowed to die. The soil for it to grow again is still too barren. It will probably have to be fertilised with the blood and bones of the people for a while before it will grow anything as beautiful again, as what the USA was meant to be.

  Yes, the Republic is Dead. The system of ONE party doesn’t work any more. I’m thinking more along the lines of leaving the country, rather than actually becoming complicit it the blatant Corporate Criminal Collective of Cronies they call CONGRESS. There isn’t a single one there right now that can change it - nor do they want to once their in. What makes you think any one of US can do so. I guess you don’t really understand the workings of the professional MOB they call Congress. If Conyers can’t do anything I’d say you’re wasting your breath. It’s a nice fluffy piece, but it doesn’t identify the "how". Only suggests "that" we should ’get involved’. I’ve been involved locally and the system is against change.

  Nope, I’m thinking of another country - third world - rural - abject poverty - sustainence farming - but away from this mafia they call the US and it’s materialistic addictions and ignorant population who’s interests are more about television then reality.

  Democracy was a nice experiment, but it ended in 2000 and it won’t be returning any time soon. I’d rather not waste the rest of my life battling the wind.

    Well you clearly missed the point, which was, no single congressperson can affect change, but a united group of 435 could sweep the house and literally save america. the evidence is abundant, everone knows the system is screwed. this kind of movement would inspire those 50% non-voters to go to the polls.

  Thank you Ben for doing what a lot of Americans will not do. We are losing our republic even as I write this but there are many
  like myself who are trying to wake people up and let them know. The problem is that most fall on one side or the other of the left/right paradigm and therefore will not believe any news that they get from other sources. For example, most "conservatives" will believe Fox news but Fox news won’t give them any real news. if they do get the real story most republicans will only write it off as liberal propaganda. People are slowly beginning to wake up and there are several Iraq vets who are coming home and running as democrats.
  The thing that I fear is another staged terrorist attack because then, all bets are off, marshal law will be declared and the republicans control everything. I know that this probably sounds like the rant of an insane conspiracy theorists. many in my country think this of people who think like I do but let’s face it, we are being sold out big time here in "The Land Of The Free." That’s all that I have time for now but I enjoy this blog whenever I read it. Thank you for caring!

  I am sorry to say that I have come to the following conclusion:

  The American People are the problem.

  I wish you luck in replacing the hideous republicrat nexus which rules Washington, but it will not solve the base problem, namely, that the USA is - and always has been - a nation which relies on theft, murder, lies, war, and genocide to survive and thrive.

  Your Consitution was written by apparently insane persons who would with one breath utter words like "all men are created equal" but then turn around and write a document which secured rights for the smallest minority on the continent - white land-owning men. It’s been a scam from day one, and that is why your Congress is not worth fighting for. Whether "constitutional" or not, the American record since WWII has been exceedingly evil - simply ask the familes of 3 million dead in Vietname, 2 million dead in Korea, 2 million dead in Cambodia, 250,000 dead in El Salvador, 250,000 dead in Guatemala, 1/3 of the population of East Timor dead, 1.5 million dead in Iraq due to sanctions, and the list goes on and on and on.

  The ignorance of the American people should be revealed for what it is - WILLFUL ignorance - the kind of ignorance that says "if the truth is believed, we will lose everything."

  Overthrow not only your government, but your mindset, your culture - everything about you which says you deserve to rule the planet and consume 1/4 of its resources. THAT is the only way you will save the good parts of America.

    Everything that you said is true and I don’t disagree with your assessment. However, overthrowing our government by force, (if that’s what you mean) will not be easy. But revolutions never are. That said there are some good people here working to create change.
    I wouldn’t want those good people to be judged by the actions of this government because even some republicans are leaving the fold.
    Still... the problem is no longer merely an American one. It’s a global problem controlled by the fascists in Washington. Oh.. and wait for Hillary? Most self-respecting progressives that I know wouldn’t vote for her or Kerry or most of the Dems.

    I was thinking along the lines of a new "tea Party" but instead of a "Boston Tea Party" having a Texas Tea Party, if you will. What I would recommend to everyone is to first boycott Exxon/Mobil. If you must buy gas, buy it from other oil companies. What we have in America is a form of corporate fascism. Therefore, let’s go direct to the puppeteers and hit them where we know it hurts them the most. Cutting down on oil consumption is a great start but boycotting those companies like Exxon/Mobil who have not only poisoned the environment, but have also used catastrophes like Hurricane Katrina to gouge at the pumps and therefore report record profits, is a way of hitting them where it hurts! I say, fuck em’!

  In addition to this, may I also suggest something? We all get together as one and vote every single incumbent out of office in ’06 and ’08. The ONLY thing politicians care about is maintaining their hold on power. Therefore, this would send profound shockwaves through the halls of power in this pathetic country. That and the fact that we did something they fear almost as much as getting their asses voted out of office. We all got together and acted for the common good!!!!

  Despite the fact that many (maybe most) states have no death penalty, either actual or de facto, the federal government has no such prohibition: in fact the killing of an elected official, judge, or a host of other "public servants" automatically permits a death sentence. I think some states have that provision too.
  In case you were not aware of it, the death penalty is not an effective deterrent to murder, except when it involves an elected official, judge, etc, etc. That explains this puzzling dichotomy in jurisprudence.
  I’m not sure what the exact dynamic is here, but I’m sure that it has some deep philosophical basis.

    The answer is in finding the common ground among the common people, making it as simply stated as possible in a short preferably one page treatise, or political manifesto.

    A central organising committee is only in place to co-ordinate the efforts of the whole and ensure the candidates are vetted, for intention, limited to one per district or whatever and given the support of the central grass roots movement.

    The movement itself must commit to transparency and dis-endorse publically any candidate before or after the election who fails to abide by the spirit of the movement. Candidates shall be everyday people, anyone who will swear to uphold the stated goals of a document which states as clearly and simply the ideals of the common man. They must be honest about who they are, ie, admit and crimial record, which should not even disqualify one. I have a crimianl record, yet I would be as god a candidate as you could want.

    Last but not least is this. The candidates should eschew, up front, major monetary renumeration.

    Set a basic fair salary for the job of overseeing the people’s national enterprise and union, and again via transparency sought by the committee for oversight of the common man’s candidates. This movement would be completely powerless, outside of it’s role as overseer of it’s own representatives. The only step required by the movement in order to bring any corruption or self interest to heel however, would be a public dis-endorsement.

    The problem would be eliminated almost certainly at the next election.

    There may be no need to limit the terms of any candidate either, maybe. The good and wise, the talented and competant would be able to remain as long as they served efficiently and wished to. The poeple are not really voting for candidates at all you se, to them the actual candidate would be immaterial, thus eliminating not only expensive campaigns for people, but also the fertile ground of character assassination and media manipulation which is how the most wealthy parties winm now. The only thing the people would need to know was the candidate for their common man’s representative.

    There are a number of doofuses on this thread who have failed to understand the first idea that this is about 435 candidtaes, not one individual who will battle alone.

    Don’t go all kneejerk about needing experienced and qualified candidates.

    With a trained monkey for a president as you have now, and with the sort of incompetance and total lack of integrity you now have, even taking the first 435 illegal immigrants who cross the border during the next five minutes and awarding them a seat in congress would give a better outcome than you have now, probably.

    There is one question which is hovering un asked but real.

    Will there even be another election as such? There are some appearances that the Shrub may be going to install himself for life, or at least his predecessor.

    Even hoping for a free and honest election may be pissing into the wind at this stage of course.

    If you bother digging past the 8th grade US history class, you will discover that the British had a vested interest in destroying the young United States...thus, many agent-provocateurs were sent to ridicule, propagandize, and chip away at what the founding father’s called an "experiment" themselves.

    What was the experiment? Within a few generations, if Liberty were upheld and taught, the old ways of thinking....you know, European monarchies, dictators, and kings....would shrink and new forms of thinking would begin taking place. This was the age of enlightenment after all, followed by reason.

    Were they perfect? No one is saying they were perfect, the british burned the capitol in the war of 1812.

    In spite of the fact that he owned slaves himself, as was common with plantation owners of his time, Jefferson spoke out tirelessly throughout his life against the institution of slavery and for the right of black people to be free. Apparently there were many factors, financial, social and political, that prevented him from freeing his own slaves. In a letter to Edward Coles (Aug 25, 1814), he wrote, "The laws do not permit us to turn them loose, if that were for their good." To Edward Bancroft he wrote (in 1788), "As far as I can judge from the experiments which have been made, to give liberty to, or rather to abandon persons whose habits have been formed in slavery is like abandoning children." (ME 19:41)

    Thus, he seems to have sincerely believed that merely freeing the slaves was not the best solution, and that the most important step to take was the elimination of the real source of this injustice, which was the institution of slavery itself. Thus he wrote to Edward Rutledge (in 1787), "I congratulate you, my dear friend, on the law of your State, for suspending the importation of slaves, and for the glory you have justly acquired by endeavoring to prevent it forever. This abomination must have an end. And there is a superior bench reserved in heaven for those who hasten it." (ME 6:173) His overall solution to the slavery problem was to return the blacks to their own African homeland or to some land where they could live as "a free and independent people," and to provide them with implements and skills to establish their own nation.
