3 January 2009 par (Open-Publishing)
The pair joined a panel of public figures, which also included Ken Livingstone, Bianca Jagger and George Galloway, in a news conference demanding that Israel stop its ’siege’.
An almost tearful Annie Lennox described the sadness she felt when she watched news of the Israeli strikes on Gaza - attacks which Israel says were in response to rocket fire by Hamas and its allies.
"I was thinking as a mother and as a human being - how was this going to be a solution to peace?" she said.

The Real Goal of the Slaughter in Gaza
2 January 2009 par (Open-Publishing)
Ever since Hamas triumphed in the Palestinian elections nearly three years ago, the story in Israel has been that a full-scale ground invasion of the Gaza Strip was imminent. But even when public pressure mounted for a decisive blow against Hamas, the government backed off from a frontal assault. Now the world waits for Ehud Barak, the defence minister, to send in the tanks and troops as the logic of this operation is pushing inexorably towards a ground war. Nonetheless, officials have (…)

They were eager to know whether foreigners felt safer since Hamas had taken over the Government? Indeed we did, we told them. Without doubt the past 18 months had seen a comparative calm on the streets of Gaza; no gunmen on the streets, no more kidnappings. They smiled with great pride and waved us goodbye.
Less than a week later (…) -

On 29 December 2008, I attended a peace rally in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and was fortunate enough to find two people willing to talk about their perspectives on the Israeli offensive in Gaza that began two days earlier. My thanks to both interviewees.
What follows are their perspectives:

Canada’s Globe and Mail: War-Mongering on Afghanistan
1 January 2009 par (Open-Publishing)
The Globe and Mail, Canada’s ’newspaper of record’ is making a campaign for the country’s political elite to once again defy public sentiment and extend the Canadian Armed Forces’ intervention in Afghanistan beyond the current deadline of December 2011". Sadly assisting in this terrible project is Canada’s ostensible ’left’ party the NDP...
