This country in my opinion is facing one of the most critical moments in our history. The idea that a President of the United States may have misled the Congress and the American people with regard to war is the most flagrant example of bad leadership and irresponsibility and corruption that one could imagine in a democratic republic such as ours. So what is being done today I think is incredibly important and I am deeply indebted to you, Mr. Conyers, for allowing it to happen or making it (…)

Our new Supreme Ct Nominee: His wife is big in satellite systems; her company is targeting Iraq
27 July 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
2 commentsYet another first for our boundary-breaching White House: for the first time in American history, we’re going to have a justice on the high court whose spouse facilitates financing and putting together global satellite systems.
Also, the company in which she is a partner, Shaw Pittman, emphasizes among other things its expertise in facilitating business in Iraq:
“We offer one-stop service to clients pursuing projects in Iraq, from solicitation and RFP counseling to working with key (…) -
Angry Afghans confront US forces

12 commentsAt least 1,000 protesters have staged a demonstration outside the main US base of Bagram in Afghanistan.
The demonstrators, chanting "Die America", were angry at the arrest of a number of villagers on Monday night. Some threw stones at military vehicles.
Piles of tyres were burned on the main road near the base, sending clouds of black smoke billowing over the area.
Eyewitness say US troops fired warning shots at the demonstrators. The US military are denying this .../... (…) -
The Police State Act: A Report

6 commentsby Rep. Ron Paul, MD
Congress passed legislation last week that reauthorizes the Patriot Act for another 10 years, although the bill faced far more opposition than the original Act four years ago. I’m heartened that more members of Congress are listening to their constituents, who remain deeply skeptical about the Patriot Act and expansions of federal police power in general. They rightfully wonder why Congress is so focused on American citizens, while bin Laden and other terrorist (…) -

Long before 9/11 or the invasion of Iraq, George W. Bush’s biographer Mickey Herskowitz quoted the presidential candidate as saying, "One of the keys to being a great leader is to be seen as a Commander-in-chief. My father had all this political capital built up when he drove the Iraqis out of Kuwait and he wasted it." And: "If I have a chance to invade, if I had that much capital, I’m not going to waste it."

Bush=Milosevich?
26 July 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
6 commentsThe more I see and hear, the more this war in Iraq appears to be a form of "ethnic cleansing", although it’s not portrayed as such. When I hear the words related to "democracy" and "freedom" used by this gang/cult in the white house, I now think "torture, imprisonment, intimidation, and tyranny" by this administration. Thousands upon thousands of innocent Iraqis’ lives are being snuffed out. These are not "insurgents". These people were like you and me- farmers, policemen, teachers, (…)

A neighbor’s view of Valerie Wilson’s ’outing’
26 July 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
1 commentJoe and Valerie Wilson are my next door neighbors in a hilly neighborhood just west of Georgetown. We moved in within months of each other seven years ago, attracted to our respective houses by the view of the Capitol in the distance and the Washington Monument in the foreground. The patriotic view is stirring.
I have another view from my window, of a neighbor who is a working, devoted mother of 5-year-old twins, a volunteer for charities, a woman active in her church, and a caring person. (…) -
Bush is Not an American
26 July 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
4 commentsSome of the die-hard, rabid right-wingers who still support George W. Bush’s immoral and illegal actions tried recently to overload my email system by flooding it with bitches and moans over recent columns about their poster boy for destruction of the Constitution.
Their grand plan didn’t work. My anti-spam filter caught most of them because it quite properly considers GOP-generated mail spam (as it does for Democratic-generated mail).
The handful of messages that got through cried about (…) -
