The following remarks were made by independent journalist John Pilger to a March 20 anti-war rally in Sydney.
The other day, the Aboriginal filmmaker Richard Frankland said this: “When you’ve got a voice, you’ve got freedom, and when you’ve got freedom, you’ve got responsibility. Negotiating with politicians doesn’t work. You’ve got to change attitudes.” That’s the task for all of us here today. It’s not an easy one. In fact, many good people in Australia and other countries believe their (…)

Whom to believe? US Media reports one death. Other sources say at least 29.
7 April 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
2 commentsSome of us don’t trust the US media since the election on November 2, so we have taken to looking elsewhere for accurate news accounts. Since the US media doesn’t seem very interested in telling us what’s going on in Iraq, some of us have found other sources, like the one from which this story was lifted below. (The link will take you to the original, so you can judge for yourself.)
What is interesting is that the US media has reported ONE US death over the past two days. Maybe, if you’ve (…) -
Fighting for Unions

3 commentsby Stewart Acuff
Some 57 million nonunion workers in the United States say they would form a union tomorrow if given the chance, according to new poll conducted in February by Peter D. Hart and Associates. For many of them, especially women and people of color, having a union is often the difference between living in or out of poverty. Yet the truth is that a sophisticated and systematic effort to deny workers their basic freedom of association is rampant in this country.

Cops joined in to protect the protesters outside the Governor’s fundraiser. Follow the liveblog of these astounding events)
This is one thing I love about California, and San Francisco in particular, they don’t play around. Bob Brigham is on-the-ground right now, (…) -

6 April 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
Apr 5, 2005 By Waleed Ibrahim, Reuters
An Iraqi apparently suspected by U.S. troops of taking part in attacks in Baghdad accused U.S. forces on Tuesday of taking his mother and sister hostage to pressure him and his brothers into surrendering for questioning.
A U.S. military spokesman in Baghdad said he doubted the accusation and was not aware of such an incident. But neighbors interviewed around Arkan Mukhlif al-Batawi’s villa in the capital’s Sunni Arab suburb of Taji corroborated his (…) -
US Had Hand In Violating Iraq Oil Sanctions

1 commentUS Had Hand In Violating Iraq Oil Sanctions Molly Ivins April 05, 2005 Some days, it’s hard to pick the outrage du jour, but hypocrisy is always an inviting target, and the United Nations oil-for-food scandal provides a two-fer.
We have been hearing much right-wing huffing over the dreadful, terrible, awful, unprecedented, worst-ever scandal in all history.
One indignant winger was livid because The New York Times devoted more coverage to the collapse of Enron than to the earth-shaking (…) -
The National Republican Party: In Contempt of Courts
5 April 2005 par (Open-Publishing)

If the radical right’s utter contempt for our nation’s courts was anything less than wholly evident prior to tonight, that blinder has been at once and permanently removed. The worst kept secret about the Republican Party in 2005 is that it does not hate the federal government in its entirety: it merely loathes—and seeks desperately to decimate—one co-equal branch of that government, the judicial branch. Editorial, The Nashua Advocate, March 23rd, 2005

Changing From Republican To Radical

1 commentChanging From Republican To Radical Michael Harris - Ottawa Sun April 01, 2005 Even the most fact-averse, red-white-and-blue groupie of George Bush has to be wondering; what the heck’s going on here?
A few weeks back, I had Pat Buchanan on my radio show. Pat, who has some strange toys of his own in the political attic, declared that the president was a radical. Not a conservative, not a Republican, a radical.
Canuckistan Pat must have choked on his Cheerios when the president summoned (…) -
Where Are the Great Statesmen
5 April 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
2 commentsWASHINGTON — The International Criminal Court has been ratified by 100 nations, but the United States is conspicuously absent from the roster of supporters of the tribunal which was created to prosecute individuals who commit genocide or crimes of war.
The court, which came into existence in 2002, was created by a treaty negotiated by 120 nations at a conference sponsored by the United Nations in Rome in 1998. The tribunal would step in to prosecute alleged war crimes only if national (…)
