In the baseball steroid hearings, we saw aggressive questioning by representatives, but when it involves anything important, like war funding or CIA torture, members of this Congress are nothing but yes-men and neutered pussycats.
If you watched or read about the Congressional hearings yesterday conducted by the House Government Reform Committee, you’d have thought Congress was a real legislature, with bulldog representatives willing to stop at nothing to get at the truth.
There was Rep. (…)

To Rachel Corrie with love
18 March 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
Would your death, dear Rachel, wake the dead World who watches our death sleeping in its bed ? Would the world remain silent and continue to be mislead And with lies, hypocrisy and ignorance continue to be fed ?
Would your death, sweet Rachel, be another number Added to the long list of martyrs and freedom fighters ? No shame, no decency in the faces of those who govern No humanity, no courage in the hearts of the occupiers
Would your death, humane Rachel, beautiful flower Be transformed (…) -

3 commentsBy Doug Lorimer
On February 25, US Army officials at Fort Stewart, Georgia, announced that Sergeant Kevin Benderman, a 40-year-old army mechanic who refused to deploy to Iraq for a second tour of duty, will be court-martialed on desertion charges. If convicted, he faces up to seven years in prison.
After having spent 10 years in the US military, Benderman missed his unit’s deployment flight to Iraq on January 7. Ten days earlier, he had given his commanders notice that he planned to seek (…) -
17 TECHNIQUES FOR TRUTH SUPPRESSION
18 March 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
3 commentsStrong, credible allegations of high-level criminal activity can bring down a government. When the government lacks an effective, fact-based defense, other techniques must be employed. The success of these techniques depends heavily upon a cooperative, compliant press and a mere token opposition party.
1. Dummy up. If it’s not reported, if it’s not news, it didn’t happen.
2.Wax indignant. This is also known as the "how dare you?" gambit.
3.Characterize the charges as "rumors" or, (…) -
$9 Billion Stolen from Iraqis, Congress investigates Steroids in Baseball
18 March 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
1 commentThere is real and verifiable corruption in Washington DC. These facts are all public knowledge, but the media refuses to put it all together. The only conspiracy here is that of the media to keep this story buried.
Last year whistleblowers exposed fraudulent practices by Dick Cheney’s (433,000 stock options, $1 million annual paycheck) Halliburton. Our government gave Halliburton a no-bid contract valid for 5 years. The top army official recommended an open-bid 1 yr deal, she was (…) -
Tactic: Appeal To The Listeners’ Deepest Fears
18 March 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
2 commentsTactic: Appeal To The Listeners’ Deepest Fears Tom Ball March 17, 2005 I can’t tell you how many times we’ve seen this tactic overplayed since Bush came into office. In fact, I think it’s his favorite — ironically striking terror into the minds of the populace with warnings of...well...terrorism. But who should we really fear?
Technique: Appeal to the listeners’ deepest fears and most irrational hopes while playing to their most simplistic beliefs. Arouse fear of what might happen if (…) -
"Hypocrite Nation"
18 March 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
16 comments"Hypocrite Nation" Rev. John Dear March, 2005 Last September, I spoke to some 2,000 students during their annual lecture at a Christian college in Pennsylvania. After a short prayer service for peace centered on the Beatitudes, I took the stage. “Now let me get this straight,” I said. “Jesus says, ‘Blessed are the peacemakers,’ which means he does not say, ‘Blessed are the warmakers,’ which means, the warmakers are not blessed, which means warmakers are cursed, which means, if you want to (…)

Bush Lipsynchs his ENTIRE press conference
17 March 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
5 commentsGeorge W. Bush made history today.
He gave the first Presidential press conference in which every single word he spoke was fed to him through his earpiece.
How do I know?
Forget the famous debate bulge photos - we’ll never see the likes of those again. First, the White House will never again permit a camera behind his back which might take tell-tale photos. Second, the gadget wizards at the CIA have come up with a far less conspicuous gadget. Third, they found a new tailor who can hide (…) -
Filling the Congressional Cop-Out Gap

1 commentFilling the Congressional Cop-Out Gap. An Idea for Local Peace Groups and Local Peace Activists
by Ralph Nader
Dear Member of Congress (Representative and two Senators):
According to a Harris poll last month, 59 percent of Americans want US troops brought home within the next year. We are among them. You are not listening to us. Here is what we propose: To meet with you in a public auditorium with the media invited on [insert date]_ when you say you will back in your state (district). (…)
