Waives trafficking sanctions
by Brian Richards
WASHINGTON, D.C. — (OfficialWire) — 09/25/05 — George W. Bush and his religious Right administration decided Wednesday to waive all financial sanctions against Saudi Arabia-Washington’s closest Arab ally in the war on terrorism and a major owner of the United States-for failing to do enough to stop the slave trade in prostitutes, child sex workers and forced laborers. Go figure.
Last June, U.S. State Department officials singled out 14 (…)

Union women unite in Detroit
24 September 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
1 commentThe 600 union members gathered Friday for a national convention in downtown Detroit were buzzing about the nomination of John Roberts to be the chief justice of the Supreme Court - because of his positions on issues such as reproductive rights and pay equity for women.
At the plenary session at the Marriott Renaissance Center, speakers talked about cervical cancer and contraceptive equity. And among the topics for that afternoon’s workshops : A Man is not a Financial Plan, Personal Safety (…) -

WASHINGTON
As President Bush traveled around the country last week, he got caught up in a battle of women.
Women - mothers and widows of men killed in Iraq - were the most vocal leaders of antiwar protests in Texas, Idaho and Utah that dogged Mr. Bush all week. Another woman, Tammy Pruett, whose husband and five sons have served in Iraq, was showcased by the White House as a pro-war counterpoint.
The tableau was a striking change from the 1960’s protests against (…) -

18 August 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
1 commentWASHINGTON - As a young lawyer in the Reagan White House, Supreme Court nominee John Roberts concluded that a group’s memorial service for aborted fetuses was “an entirely appropriate means of calling attention to the abortion tragedy.”
Roberts wrote the advice in an October 1985 memo after he was asked to review a proposed telegram from President Reagan to the memorial service promoted by the California Pro Life Medical Association.
“The president’s position is that the fetuses were (…) -
Phoenix Diocese bans politicians who support abortion, gay rights
7 August 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
4 commentsPHOENIX - Politicians who support issues like abortion and gay rights have been banned from speaking at Catholic churches in the Phoenix Diocese.
So far, Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano has been the only one affected by the edict from Phoenix Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted.
Napolitano was forbidden to speak last year at a Catholic church in Scottsdale at an event opposing Proposition 200, a ballot measure that restricted the rights of undocumented immigrants. The event was moved to another (…) -
Supreme Court - Media Ignore Possible "Fascist" Play
6 July 2005 par (Open-Publishing)
2 commentsThe Bush administration is spectacularly good at sleight-of-hand tricks, directing public attention in one direction while they’re working diligently in another. The latest trial balloon of "probable" Supreme Court nominees is no exception.
While everybody is worried about abortion rights and corporate power, a far more insidious agenda may be at play.
Anti-abortion forces and women’s rights groups alike are up in arms about the possibility that the next nominee may or may not have an (…) -

The new Pope alias the Despicable Joseph Ratzinger was the leading Vatican player promoting Bush Junior’s election campaign last year. JR issued an edict to the American hierarchy instructing them that the supreme issue in the US election of 2004 was the use of police powers to lock up abortionists. JR made it clear to US Catholics that the Vatican preferred the candidacy of George Bush, supposedly on that ground.
US Catholics voted for Bush over Kerry by a margin of (…) -

The Fifth World Conference on Women drew to a close with a reaffirmation by ministers, government delegates, first ladies and non-governmental representatives from around the world that ’’women’s rights are human rights’’. But for many who attended the two-week conference, ’’reaffirmation’’ was not enough.

Women worldwide face effects of Bush’s gag rule

Tuesday is International Women’s Day, a worldwide celebration of women’s fight for equality and human rights. In light of this commemoration, it is especially disappointing that the Bush administration is working so hard to restrict women’s rights.
Ten years ago, a landmark U.N. conference in Beijing adopted a platform seeking to establish global equality for women. Along with recommendations on issues such as domestic violence and education, the platform states women (…)
