Black Commentator vs. The Wall Street Journal
16 January 2006By BC Associate Editor Bruce Dixon
In their quest for absolute political hegemony in the United States, some elements of the Right now dare to claim to share with blacks - if not common cause - common conclusions about the state of race relations in America. In a January 8, 2006 piece weighted with the full freight of centuries of white supremacist delusions, Wall Street Journal columnist James Taranto claimed that BC’s January 5, 2006 Cover Story, "Katrina Study: Black Consensus, White (…) -
Shut Them Down!: The G8, Gleneagles 2005 and the Movement of Movements
16 January 2006by Dissent! and Autonomedia
Bob Geldof’s appointment as an advisor to the Conservative party has provoked a reassessment of the momentous week last summer when the G8 met in Gleneagles. This reassessment is aided by the timely publication of a new book full of first hand accounts by those more interested in shutting the G8 down than lobbying it.
David Watts, one of the books editors, commented: "There seems to be a growing sense of disillusionment with the legacy of the Live8 concerts (…) -
Pants on Fire: the Liars of the Bush Administration will take the world down in flames if we let them
16 January 2006By Daniel Patrick Welch
Sam Alito is merely the latest liar on the block for Bush’s full spectrum dominance agenda. But the show-trial hearings on whether this proto-fascist ideologue should be allowed to shape US social and political development for a generation provide some nuggets of insight into how the corrupt junta’s pathological liars actually work.
The first order of amazement is that the process can actually take place. Shouldn’t precedence be given to hearings on impeaching and (…) -
Old, blind, crippled - and fit for execution
16 January 2006Schwarzenegger accused of ’affront to human dignity’ as he rejects clemency plea
By Andrew Gumbel
California’s Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, has denied clemency to the oldest prisoner on California’s Death Row, saying a murderer’s life should not be spared because he is old and ill. Although Clarence Ray Allen still has an appeal pending before the Supreme Court, the decision increases the likelihood that he will be executed by lethal injection on Tuesday, a day after he turns 76. Rolling their eyes
16 January 2006By Haaretz Editorial
It is difficult to know what eventually led the government to discuss the chopping down of Palestinian olive trees by thugs from the settlements. Perhaps it was the media coverage, or the change of guard at the head of the cabinet table. Or maybe it was the complaints filed by the Yesh Din human rights organization on behalf of the Palestinian victims that ended up on the table of the attorney general, or the fact that the chopping down of olive trees - as opposed to (…) -
Bush rebuffs Merkel on Guantanamo
16 January 2006US President George W Bush has rejected criticism over the Guantanamo Bay camp raised by German Chancellor Angela Merkel during talks in Washington.
President Bush said it was a necessary part of protecting the American people.
But the two leaders presented a united front over Iran resuming its nuclear programme, and commentators said they appeared to have got on well.
It is her first official US visit since her election which, Mr Bush joked, much like his own, was not a landslide win. (…) -

There is irrefutable evidence that the Bush Administration has violated numerous international laws
16 January 2006There is a growing awareness among the chattering classes in the United States that President W. Bush may be guilty of war crimes. Democratic Congressman and ranking minority member of the House Judiciary Committee, John Conyers, introduced resolutions calling for the creation of a panel to investigate Bush and Cheney’s handling of the war. Although a long way from framing articles of impeachment, it is an important first step.
There is overwhelming and irrefutable evidence that (…) -
This war as an unjust, evil and futile war: MLK on Vietnam/Iraq
15 January 2006MLK 1 Unjust Evil and Futile War - mp3
I will be discussing today one of the most controversial issues confronting our nation. I’m using as a subject from which to preach, why I am opposed to the war in Vietnam.
Now let me make it clear in the beginning, that I see this war as an unjust, evil and futile war. I preach to you today on the war in Vietnam because my conscience leaves me with no other choice. The time has come for America to hear the truth about this tragic war. In (…)
