Fears were growing overnight that today’s G8 summit in Scotland was set to be derailed by violence and political bickering.
Sir Bob Geldof, the organiser of the weekend’s Live8 concerts to fight poverty, was downbeat last night.
"We have the potential to make this an historic G8," Geldof said.
"But I don’t think they (G8 leaders) are anywhere near there."
More than 60 people were arrested in Edinburgh as violent protesters infiltrated mass demonstrations for G8.

Energy Adviser Who Solicited Enron to Help Write Nat’l Energy Policy to Be Named Chair of FERC
6 July 2005By Jason Leopold
The audacity inside the Bush administration never ceases to amaze.
The latest example of chutzpah from Bush and co. is the announcement that Joseph Kelliher, a former policy adviser with the Department of Energy who currently serves as a commissioner on the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, the agency that controls the country’s natural gas industry, hydroelectric projects, electric utilities, and oil pipelines and has played a critical role in the deregulation of (…) -

5 July 2005Mom, Who Lost Son In Iraq, Talks About ’Disgusting’ White House Private Meeting With Bush; Claims He Was Arrogant, ’Totally Detached From Humanity’ And Didn’t Even Know Her Name
Founder of peace group to stop senseless murder of our children, Cindy Sheehan wants parents to ’wake up’ to the illegal nature of the war and Bush’s corrupt motives meriting impeachment. She tells parents to advise their children not to fight, saying it’s better ’to spend a year in jail instead of an eternity in a (…) -
Chavez Congratulates Ahmadinejad
5 July 2005Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez Frías called Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and congratulated him on his landslide victory. Closer cooperation between Caracas and Teheran did not begin with Ahmadinejad’s election, since it had long been part of Chávez’s efforts to diminish Venezuela’s dependence on the United States as its primary energy export market, diversify its trade partners, and support the right of self-determination. Caracas and Teheran are said to be both price hawks when it comes to oil, (…)

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s Face
5 July 2005It is not the reformists’ promise of freedom of expression and association that the Iranian working class rejected in the presidential election this year. What they refused to tolerate any longer is deteriorating economic conditions that neoliberalism brought them. "Mr. [Mahmoud] Ahmadinejad, who catapulted to president-elect from near obscurity as the appointed mayor of Tehran, campaigned on a populist message, promising to redistribute the nation’s wealth, hold down prices, raise salaries (…)

Disgraced Tony Blair
5 July 2005The disgraced British Prime Minister Tony Blair is using the G8 for his personal PR and to distract attention from his crimes against humanity in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq. As he speaks for the African poor, his troops and aircraft are killing the poor in Afghanistan and Iraq. His men are torturing innocent in US secret prisons around the world. British businesses are busy stealing others’ wealth and resources. Blair is worst than Bush because Bush is honestly stupid. Americans elect (…)

WORTH A MILLION WORDS
5 July 2005Tuesday/Wednesday, July 5-6, 2005
Yesterday, an Iraqi-American friend stopped by to chat. I showed him the Automotive section of the San Diego Union-Tribune in which there was an article called "War Utility Vehicle" that concerned Humvees. It was written by Jerry Garrett who also writes for Car and Driver magazine.
I was quite disturbed by a photo of a Humvee knocking a car driven by an Iraqi off the road under the "crash first and ask questions later" driving technique used by the U.S. (…)
